Hi, i'm new to these forums so forgive me if this has been asked for whatever, but i didn't see a search function.
I'm just wondering, if i wanted to convert an mp3 file into a ringtone for my phone, Z710i, what file do i need to convert it into?
Just to note, i'm not very technology oriented but my friend told me i needed to know the type of file to convert into before i can convert it. If i make no sense, i apologize, but i really want to convert a mp3 file i have into a ringtone for my phone.
Thanks alot.

I have the same problem with my new Z710i from Fido (Canada). But I don't think it has to do with file format. There are already MP3 files on the phone that are obviously ringtones (I can play them) that don't show up on the list when I try to select new tones. Nor do new MP3 files that I place in the same directory (these are also less than the 600Kb limit that was reported to be an issue for the 600 series).
I believe the specs for Z710 indicate these should be playable. I doubt that downloading new MP3 tones would make a difference.
Is this because my carrier has locked out this feature? Help needed.

Just answered my own question.
Asked at a Fido kiosk, and while they weren't aware of the problem, they had a solution for phones which wouldn't play MP3's that were perceived to be missing the DigitalRightsManagement (DRM). Anyway, there's an application on the Sony Developer site that will put the appropriate settings in any MP3 file (you would think they'd want to prevent anyone from using this, but not our issue).
Steps:
1. Download the DRM Packager 1.33 (or 3.0 for Mac) from http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/docstools/misc/p_misc.js p
(has other toys too. If you have trouble getting the download to start and you're using Firefox, switch to IE)
2. Open it and install it
3. Drag and drop your original MP3 onto it
4. Hit "Create DRM Content" and it creates a subdirectory where the original was with the new file with an icon that looks like a block and key
5. Connect to phone with Bluetooth or USB. Do not Open Phone (this is important so that you go through their FileManager - you can't just copy the file onto the memory).
6. Drag & drop the new MP3 onto the root of the phone (i.e. the icon for the phone itself). The phone will respond almost immediately asking if you want to use the file now.
I had my doubts about whether this was the problem, but it works. Even made the MP3s supplied with the phone work. Also note this doesn't affect the phone itself so you don't have to worry about damaging anything or risking the warranty. It only changes external files.
Good luck

I tried to do as you suggested here. Have used the DRM and converted the files. The ringtones I'd like to use are small files as well.
What happens to me is that everytime I download the file, the phone states it cannot be used as a ringtone (this is using their pc to phone software).
If I drag n drop it using the computer, the file goes into a folder called "other". From there, I cannot move it into the Ringtues file. (b.t.w.- I'm using windows 2000).
If you could contact me, I'd appreciate it. I know I'm simply doing some little step wrong. I believe its when I'm downloading from the pc to the 710i.
Could you drop me your email address? I'd appreciate it so I could contact you. Oh- I'm in the G.T.A., and my carrier is FIDO. And if anyone else out there can get this dork thru this, I'd appreciate it.

Happy to talk to you but am a bit reluctant to post my e-mail address on this public site ( direct contact seems to be disabled).
Not obvious what what we're doing different, but mine does end up in the RingTone directory on the phone memory (not the memory stick). And I didn't tell it where to put it, just dropped it on the Phone icon in the Sony FileManager that represents both drives. All I can think of is you need to copy the .dm version of the file, not the original MP3. Actually I just tested that and doesn't seem to fly as the untouched MP3 file seems to end up in the root of the music directory on the memory stick. What is the extension on the file you tried to transfer? "Other" seems to be where it might put things it doesn't know what they are.

Roy!
Greetings from the land of the dorks! Maybe you've said this before.-"I can't believe how stupid I was".
I figured out the mistake I was making, and it was very simple. You were loosing me on the file transfer section. What I was doing wrong:
You need to click on the Icon called "Sony Ericsson File Manager". By doing so, you open the connection to the phone, without "opening the phone" as you stated. Then, once IN the file manager, you drag 'n drop the files with the .dn extension right there. You know you have done it correctly, because your phone will make a "chime" noise (at least mine did).
So everyone- it works. DORK tested and approved. Just follow all the steps mentioned. Be sure to have your phone on. Have it closed. Do not go in and select file download. Don't do anything but plug it in via the USB cable. And drop the files in the file manager. The files (once converted) will look like a box with a locked lock in front of them, and have an extension dn. . The files must look like this- not a regular MP3- in order to be used.
Thank you to all in here for the help. Great forum, with some pretty smart cats. And one day, if you hear the theme to college football from CBS Sports, and a guy answers a cell phone- say hi!.

Glad to hear it. Actually I made the same mistake myself first - couldn't believe it actually mattered if you copied the file to the directory yourself. But it does.

Want to know the best part?
The guy who was the "expert" at the FIDO kiosk (3 people working there that day.) told me I couldn't download with the phone. "Even with the DRM program. You have to hit and miss with mp3's. Some will work, and others wont. Mostly -they wont. You usually have to re-flash your phone, and void the warranty- so I suggest you don't.".
Amazing.
So I went back and gave him a how to that I had printed out. His collegues were stund. I played him my ringtunes. It was hilarious.
Don't always believe what you hear.

Hi all,
I need help with my ringtone. I've followed step by step according to nickle and Roy's instructions but for some reason I still couldn't transfer the dm. file on my phone's ringtone folder. When I try to drag the dm. file into the ringtone folder (via File manager & USB) it reads "cannot transfer file due to unexpected error). My carrier is also Fido. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Not sure about the "unexpected error", but you mention you tried to copy it to the ringtone folder. I tried that and it didn't work. You have to drop it on the icon for the root of the phone - the phone itself then does some processing and moves it to the ringtone folder.
Hopefully that will work for you.
