I've been reading all the Nokia vs. the world press updates on how the N-Gage sales have been a miserable flop in both the US (500 units in its first week) and in the UK (another 5000 units). Nokia, on its part, says its "shipped 400,000 units worldwide" but obviously that's not the same as saying "400,000 consumers actually bought the 400,000 N-Gages we shipped to retailers."
Now I want to hear from you folks on the ground level - real consumers outside of the retail/Nokia side. Is the unit all that bad?

no
the function of a phone is very good
reception is top-notch (uses bar antenna, located at the bottom of numeric keypad)
speakerphone and ringtone is loud enough to go
the screen is crystal clear under both light and darkness
voice-tag dialing
digital mp3 ring voice
the only problem is...pcm for games and realone
it's mono, and just phone-like quality
but it don't matter anymore
I use HP 1945's realone instead of n-gage

I guess Nokia tried something that's already been done. If I wanted a portable game deck, I would buy a Game Boy; most people already have a mobile phone.
Besides, you wouldn't carry a game boy EVERYWHERE you went... I'd hate to look like a wanker carrying that thing around in my pocket all the time!

1. You've flipped numbers. UK 500; US 5000
2. Most websites speak about a flop. But they only compare the sales firgures with the sales in the first week of other consoles like PS2 etc.
That's not the real thing. Other consoles are also buyed by kids, which is not the target group for this. Kids would alway go for a Game Boy, because they knew it and they don't need a hybrid thing...
3. This sales figures are only from game stores, so no mobile phone stores are considered.
4. N-Gage is like Robbie Williams No success in the USA... who cares Nokia is trying to concentrate for the rest of the world.

That's a good argument (especially about Robbie Williams, hehe ) I just have to wonder now how the N-Gage sales figures compare to other PHONES as opposed to PS2's, etc. Obviously it's not going to sell in the quantities of a 3310, but that's a market segmentation issue. But does it really deserve the FLOP label? I've fooled around with it a bit, and people who complain about it being big and chunky obviously aren't looking at the 7650, 3650, P800, etc. as other "big" phones that made a huge market splash.

I think it would be cool if the Nokia N-GAGE was the same size as the new 3300 (uk-style)...
i almost brought the Nokia N-Gage the other day, well till we got round 2 "HOW U ANSWER THE PHONE" that does suck

That's ridiculous. I saw pictures of people "sidetalking" but I thought it was just some kind of inside joke. I had no idea that really is how you're supposed to talk on an N-Gage.
I do hope Nokia had the foresight to at least package a headset with the phone?
