Hi all! I just bought a new Nokia 6230i off Ebay to stand in for my 6230 bought directly from Cingular over a year ago.
In my house the old one gets great reception all over, 4-5 bars out of 6 all the time. I've got them both sitting right here and as I pop the SIM card into the new 6230i and turn it on, I get 1 or zero bars (at which point calls do not go out), but if I take the SIM card out and put it in my old 6230 I immediately get the good signal again.
The phone is unlocked, it was unlocked before it shipped to me. I plan to take it out tomorrow just to see if the signal remains bad outside the house.
Does anyone have a clue why this might happen, and maybe if it's just a bad phone that should be returned? Should I try going to Cingular and getting a new SIM card?
Thanks for any tips
Cameron

Is the 6230 from ebay from the US?

The 6230 was bought from Cingular directly in the US. The new 6230i was bought from an Ebay.com seller, though it appears to be originally from the UK telecom O2.
I have a little more info about it now though, having spent a night with it. There are many places where the signal is just fine, and the sound quality is excellent. But in my house, my old phone, and a friend's phone also on Cingular, get more than 50% of bars in places where the new phone gets no service at all.
I really do like this phone but one of those places with no service being my bedroom, it's not acceptable. Do I send it back or is there anything I can do to make the reception better?

I just found out that the 6320i is a tri band with 900/1800 and one other, while the 6320 is tri with 850/1800 and the same other one. Seems like this could account for it, no?

That's why I asked. Cingular uses both 850/1900 MHz. The 6230 from the UK is only picking up the 1900 MHz because as you found out it does not support 850 MHz.

Well CRAAAP
So much fine print! Guess it's gotta go back.
So. what other networks in the USA would this phone be better with? I can't find the info on Google immediately, but would Verizon be better?
Thanks!

Verizon isn't compatible. T-mobile uses only the 1900 MHz band so that may be an option.
Check this site for GSM carriers and coverage maps for a better idea.
