Hi, I was wondering why GSM phones cause buzzing sounds in landlines and speakers? This doesn't happen with CDMA, TDMA, or analog phones...

I'm not sure about this, but in Allen's reviews he talks about the vibrations of the phone in the GSM technology that causes the mobile phone to have sounds... maybe its the same when a mobile phone comes close to a landline.

I never realized it until I read this thread and tried it at my house. Now I'm curious as well...

I didn't realize it was GSM only. Now I know what type of network my girlfriend's phone runs on I still don't know mine though since I've never had my phone on while using a land-line.
As for the reasons, it might have something to do with the frequency and/or electrical interference. I used to live on a farm and when we had the electric fence turned on there would be interference while using the radio on some frequencies as well as the phone. The interference from my girlfriend's cell phone sounds a lot like the interference from the electric fence.

I also get the same effect with my nokia 3360 (tdma). It's electromagnetic interference, microwaves + technology(that doesn't use it) don't mix too well.

The real reason for the buzzing sound is just as stated above that the electromagnetic fields emitted from the phone induce a current in wires, for instance speaker cables. However the sound is the strongest when the phone is communicationg with the base where the modulated signal follows a predefined pattern (more below). The reason for us being able to hear this sound is a bit more complex. The carrier frequency and the modulation rate is much to high for us to pick up. The human ear can hear up to about 20 kHz. The sound we hear is the envelope (dont know if this is the correct English term), i.e. the outline of the modulated wave viewed in the time domain.
Hope this was a bit helpful and not too technical.

ALL mobile phone will radiate some RF into various devices with different effects, as in I used to have an old mixing console that I had to insure that no phones were within 6 or 7 feet from it. The shielding in the mixer was quite poor by today's standards.
The GSM phones have a much more pronounced effect. I had never heard a phone come through the radio in my pick-up before I got the Razr and it scared the crap out of me when it did it the first time. And while modern mixers are much better shielded, I don't know if anything can block a GSM's phone interference. Sometimes in crowded environments, that noise will suddenly come through the PA and I have to start pushing people away from the mixer to find it and get to stop.
It's kinda funny to be sitting here at the computer and hear that "tick-tick-tick-tick....TRRRRRRR!!!!" going off through the notebook speakers, and THEN the phone rings. But it's not so funny at, say a meeting of top brass at Nissan!
