I'll get right to the point. I was charged 2.50/min for minutes that I used with my cell phone onboard a Cruise Ship in Hawaii. I have never even heard of this before. I have been to the Islands many times, fly over. stay on the islands.and fly back and I have never been charged a dime, only plan cell minutes. The calls made from the Islands of Hawaii were free due to free roaming and free long distance on my phone plan. However, it was explained to me by verizon help line that once you step onboard the ship, you are now using the radio waves from the ship. The ship was literally parked 2 feet from the shore, yet when I made a call from the land it was free and from the ship 2 feet away I was charged 2.50/min. Has anyone else had this problem and how do I try to redeem my $$, who do I write to? I just don't feel that it was fair to charge this excessive amount without first notifying the customer of this excessive charge. I don't know of anyone in their right mind that would knowingly pay 2.50/min with the cell phone when much less expensive alternatives were available,.Had I Known! Thanks for the help in advance.Cruising

This isn't the first time this instance has occurred. My recommendation is to have the calls reviewed for where they were made, and negotiate whatever they offer, unless nothing is. Often times this occurs with international towers; some one will travel near the border, and the cell tower used is across it so international minutes are billed. Mostly this can't be avoided, just explained. But if they actually can pinpoint a nearby tower that your calls should have been picking up during that call, maybe with management discretion you can get some of the charge cut off.

I agree that you should try and negotiate the charges, but you have to realize that the nationwide coverage does not actually cover the ship- it is not one of the 50 states. I would hope to get a price break, but I really wouldn't expect to get all the charges reversed.
