I'm interested in buying a new phone because my Motorola SLVR is falling apart on me. I'm thinking about buying a used phone thats unlocked but i few questions. I still have about a year on my contract but i don't believe my phone will last until next year. My carrier is Cingular
My first question is Will I have to get a new sim card for the phone I get, and would there be any cost for it?
My second is If i do buy an unlocked phone will i still be able to use text messaging. Texting is something that i do all the time. Again my carrier is Cingular
And finally what would be a good phone to get (new or used) for someone like me who text messages ALOT
Thank you!

You can use the sim you have now. Check out www.phonescoop.com for phones and reviews.

Text messaging will be no problem, either. Once you get your new phone - whatever it is - you simply put in the necessary settings (go to the FAQ thread at the top of this forum or to Cingular's website) and it works just fine. I have an unlocked phone (RAZR) and I have no problems with text messages or web browsing.
Of course, you want to make sure that you get a phone capable of text messaging, but nowadays there isn't really a phone that doesn't have that capability.
Respectfully,
Jacob M.

I have a Cingular wireless Nokia 6061 phone (very basic) which just got busted. I still have more than a year in my contract with Cingular.
I have a Sony Ericsson Vodafone available and i'd like to transfer the SIM to this phone, however it does not seem to be compatible , I always get a "no access to network".
I also called AT&T Cingular customer service and they advised me that i can only use my SIM in a Cingular phone.
The discussion above seems to say otherwise, and I hope you can help me with this problem.
Thanks!

Cingular dose not support the use of unlocked phone , you should be able to use the voice service but data ususaly wont work, you will have to contact the orig sevice provider for the phone your wanting to unlock
