Until recently.last month or so.Sprint in NJ has had excellent signal strengths.an occasional dropped call, but nothing bothersome. Now it's a regular occurrence. Anyone experiencing the same thing? Know what might be behind it? I'm thinking of switching to another carrier. Any suggestions? I have a Samsung 640.

Hi there,
There could be many reasons why your signal has gotten worse. Sprint could have sold off their license in the area, so you are now receiving signal from a more distant tower. Your phone might have been on the old TDMA frequency (which is being decommissioned) or a new building is blocking the signal. Also, the tower might have been upgraded to HSDPA at the expense of the voice coverage.
I'd suggest giving Sprint a call. It might be the problem is a temporary one, in which case maybe you can just wait it out. If its going to be permanent, then try changing providers. Verizon is currently offering a trial of their service, and they will pay for your calls if you see no improvement! If this is too inconvenient and you have 1/2 bars of signal, you could always install a cell phone repeater.
Hope it goes well,

Sprint never used the TDMA signal style, and since they are CDMA, don't use HSDPA for their 3G high speed data solution. But calling Sprint would be a good idea, sometimes in isn't something complicated, it may just be that a tower in your area is in need of service, and without your call, they may not know of the need to fix it. Squeaky wheels get greased, call often, the more trouble tickets, the quicker they'll get out there. Even if they tell you there is nothing wrong.
