Okay, so I picked up a MicroSD memory card for my Samsung T629 (a phone which has never given me trouble - which should have been the first sign trouble was on the way) and a supposedly OEM USB cable that, once I read the invoice, was for a T809, but seemed to fit snugly and securely anyway.
When I plugged the phone into the computer it recognized it as a WMC ACM 1.0 App and started to run hardware setup- realizing I had probably gotten ahead of myself and should've probably downloaded the Samsung software before plugging in my phone I cancelled the installation process completely and unplugged the USB cable from the PC - which made sense to me.
The process cancelled and all seemed well.
After installing Samsung PC Studio 3 I started the installation process, everything went well, and then it told me to plug in the USB cable.
My PC made the classic 'ding' noise, I danced a little, and then sighed, as the 'New Hardware Found' message was now bouncing between "Samsung Mobile USB Device" and "WMC ACM 1.0 App". A 'Found New Hardware Wizard' message then popped up which read: "There was a problem installing this hardware - WMC ACM 1.0 App. An error occured during installation of this device. The Data is invalid." And then it told me to click finish and that I might not be able to use the device.
Not knowing what the WMC device was, I ignored it, and continued waiting for the PC Studio 3 to recognize the phone. which never happened. 600 or so seconds later, I hit cancel, unplugged the phone, uninstalled the software, re-installed it, and tried to connect to PC Studio 3 again, but I decided to give it more time (and fell asleep).
11,000 seconds later I realized it wasn't just going to 'take a few minutes' and gave up all hope.
I have a sneaking suspicion that this mysterious and unexplained 'WMC ACM 1.0 App' is the cause of my grief, yet I cannot seem to uninstall it from my PC's Hardware Device Manager (which lists the mystery device rather helpfully under 'Other Devices'). Also, despite the fact that the PC claims to recognize the phone as a Samsung Mobile USB Storage device. there is nothing in the 'My Computer' window. I've tried changing USB ports, and I even sacrificed a chicken on a santeria voodoo shrine. nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and may even save the life of an assumably well-meaning Samsung phone.

I bought one of those "non oem "cables too but i did not use the software that came on the disc , i got it from the Samsung site . Did you do that ? Are you running Vista ? It sounds like the driver for that phone never was installed . I tried the cable for a while but take my word for it you'd be hard pressed to find an easier method than bluetooth . The best $15 bucks i ever spent ! So basically the cable just sits in the box on my shelf . Screw it! Oh by the way i believe WMC was activated because the phone driver was not installed so windows thought you were installing some other device .

Well, the cable I ordered claimed to be OEM when I ordered it- but that's eBay for you.
As for the software, I downloaded it from the Samsung site, but still the computer seems to 'get confused' during the setup, which I presume is a result of the WMC situation.
On another note, I've already ordered a bluetooth adaptor, because I'd rather be anxiously waiting on the mail than tossing my T629 and/or PC over a bridge.
