looking for answers (no one at cinngular can help me).I spend a lot of time at my cabin which is in a low coverage area, which I can understand ,but I have friends who have the same service as I do (cinngular) .they can walk around talking on they're cell phones when I have no service.in fact I'll have to drive 15 mins. to make a call how can this be .I used to own a razr, which I traded in for a motorola v557 my one friend gets good reception with this phone there.what else could be causing this problem?

are you prepaid and your friends on a contract?
there is a difference in the coverage between the 2.

How old is your sim card? Are you powercycling your phone on a regular basis? Is there any chance that there may actually be damage in your device?

my service is a contract with cinngular. My sim card is probably 4 yrs old,but how does a sim card effect reception?I'm not sure what powercycling a phone quite means and no Russ there are no metal plates in my head (not that I'm aware of) Keep in mind this is a noted low to no reception area so it is expected to have little or no service ,but yet there are occasional friends that do get exceptional reception .i am curious about how a new sim card would help me.thanks for the replies people

if your sim is 4 yrs old that could have a small effect. but not to the extent described. could be your phone as well. try this (this will help narrow the possibilities)
swap sims with one of your buddies in the affected area. see if there is any difference. if the error is in the sim. the poor connection will follow the sim. if the fault is the phone the poor connection will stay with your device. savvy?

What is the difference in coverage? Does pre-paid only pick up 1900 MHz band?
I ask because my girlfriend is going to the mountains and doesn't get a signal with T-mobile, but I do with contracted Cingular. She's going back up to the mountains and I was going to give her a Cingular pre-paid sim that I have so she can make calls. I was guessing that I was picking up the 850 MHz on Cingular and there were no roaming agreements so she couldn't get a signal with T-mobile?
Thanks.

essentially no off network roaming.
you coul;d have full signal from a tmob tower but no registration. thats why we ask for the alfa tag.
look at the coverage maps for prepaid PGO and PYP (there are differences there too) vs any postpaid plan.
