The Iphone is not availible for customers looking to upgrade or purchase without a contract. Does this mean that if i am not a new customer, or activating a new line of service that i'm SOL

you should be allowed to upgrade your existing line. because the phone is not being discounted, I've been told any current customer will be allowed to upgrade.

the only kicker I can forsee is the iphone is basically a sealed unit. (as described internally) so it would be a phonebook txfer from old sim to new sim

Actually, the sim can be popped out.
There is a little button you have to stick something small into a whole, and when you press it, the sim card door pops open.ready to be changed,

sorry, i'm just not getting this. can you upgrade to an iphone if you are an existing AT&T customer
it comes with a sim already inserted.a typical iphone activation will mean a sim transfer (at this point in time)

you can upgrade but you will forfeit your former ATT plan (according to info at this point in time) and it will be a new 2 year contract if you do so
