Ok, my friend has a 4 way family plan, she has insurance on two phones. All her family wanted to upgrade but only two of them were able to. She got two sony ericson w810i on the lines that were eligeble for an upgrade and got insurance with them. Then reported them lost or stolen. She got two new phones and I thought it would of been funny because I was thinking they were going to block the IMEI of the phones that were reported stolen but they didn't. All the phones currently work now a couple months later.
So is it really this easy to defraud the company?
Edit: Don't they black list the IMEI number number of you do report it lost or stolen so it does not work with any sim card even from a diffrent service provider.

Wait so what are doing to stop from doing this? There must be a way from them to catch people is there not? What happens to the phone when it is reported lost or stolen?

I remember when AT&T was Cingular, their insurance provider was LOCK/LINE, and you could walk into Cingular Stores and get your phone repaired on site they almost seem to encourage insurance fraud.
After my first two years with Cingular I walked into a Store in Santa Monica and asked to upgrade my phone. The Sales Rep checked my account and said I could buy an upgraded phone for $100 or since I had insurance, if they reported it stolen, I could get a new "replacement" for $20.
I never took them up on that offer (since it seemed really shady to me), but I got the same spiel in multiple Cingular stores / Sales Reps up until about two years ago. Encouraging, essentially, insurance fraud.

what can be done is limited (other than a chair and bright lights)
what is being done is how insurance can be purchased.
you buy a new phone. the servicve is offered to you. if you decline the offer you will be informed that you have 30 days from date of purchase to add insurance to your service in case you chnge your mind.
that is the present policy.
in the past (in the good old days of former ATT) you could add insurance at any time but the feature had to be active (at one point) 30 days before you could make a claim... the insurance premium was 3.99 a month...later that minimum time was change to 90 days...then cingular came along and that policy was adopted... as you can see the door was open even wider and it was a rampant problem... now... not so much...

In the UK if a phone is reported lost it is IMEI blocked immediately. If it is reported stolen it is usually traced (phoneno rather than imei) for a month or so in order that police can try to identify the thief and is then imei blocked
