I've seen a lot of different conversations about ring tones and mp3s.
But what I want to ask is very simple.
WILL THIS WORK?
Upload mp3 from computer to Motorola RAZR V3xx via USB Cable
Then set, that same mp3 as a ring tone, either for General Call or Personalized.
The reason I'm asking is I don't want to deal with online uploading, downloading or paying someone to set a ringtone for my phone. I have the music I want, I just want to get it on my phone and set it as a ringtone, simple enough, well it's supposed to be!

Simple answer.YES.IF.
(A little complication thrown into the mix, hope you can handle it.)
.you use a program called Motorola Phone Tools (what I use) or MobilEdit (another equally capable program to upload the songs into your phone. I've been doing it for 2 or 3 years now, never bought a tune online. Mobile Phone Tools will even do all of the work to make your tunes phone-ready if you don't use some kind of audio-editing program like Audacity).
Oh, and be prepared for this.when you set a certain contact to have its own distinctive ringtone, that ringtone will play whenever you get a text message from that person. Can't fix it. Annoying, yes. Fixable, no.

Thank You very much!
It's the exact answer I was looking for, simple, and to the point, I don't have people who would txt-sms to me, so it's not a problem.

Wow, thank you. Most people don't like that about me. Happy to have been helpful.

Kandrey,
For the V3xx specifically, the ring tone must be encoded at 256 bit or lower, and the maximum file size is 600kb.
Also, there is another way to transfer it to your phone without having to buy Motorola Phone Tools. If you have already purchased a memory card for your phone. You can transfer to the card directly from a PC with just the USB cable and no software. The PC will recognize the card just like it does a USB thumb drive, and give it its own drive letter, calling it a "Removable Disk". Then using the phones own software, you can copy or move the file from the memory card to the phones internal memory.
And some V3xx owners say that ring tones can even be accessed from the memory card on that phone. Previous Moto phones required the file to be on the phones internal memory.
You can learn more about converting songs to ring tones and transferring from PC to phone here: cd2ringtone dot com

Hello, I just purchased a Motorola V3XX and followed the instructions under rjdriver's link. Everything went fine until I copied the mp3 file to my phone and tried to set it as a ringtone. I know its in my memory card and I also tried to copy it to my phones internal memory. I can only play it as an mp3 but cannot set it as a ring or data tone. I've tried it both ways using phone tools and just the USB cable by itself. It does show up on my phone and on the memory card. When I triedto set it under menu/settings/audio/detail/calls after following the instructions but it's not there when it is supposed to be. I even copied it using my phone form the memory card to the internal memory. Please Help!

Nevermind I figured it out. I changed the bit rate to 128 and shortened the songs length to 30 sec. or less. I also copied my contacts that I wanted to give a certain ring tone from my SIM to my phones internal memory. Everything is working fine.
