I've just purchased a Samsung i600 (similar to the Blackjack carried by Cingular, but with wifi and front facing video) while in Singapore on my way back to the US. The phone is unlocked and compatible with US carriers.
I signed up for a Cingular account yesterday and was assured that while unlocked phones were not typically supported, that I would not have a problem using Cingular for data. I signed up for a unlimited data plan (and seemingly everything else they had on offer). Point being, I should be all set.
I've read up, configured WAP and GPRS correctly, but am getting the following error when I attempt to connect to the web:
"Error: The remote party has ended this connection"
Voice and SMS of course work fine. From a look around the internet, it seems that I may be out of luck for Data connectivity.
A couple of questions:
1) Am I out of luck, and why? I'm not sure I understand how the network would be able to determine that I have an unlocked phone other than improper config settings.
2)Am I missing some sort of Cingular client on the phone?
3) If I need a specific Cingular client, where can I download it? I haven't seen anything on the Cingular/At&t website.
4) If I am completely screwed for Cingular, are there any US providers that accommodate unlocked phones for data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've got 29 days left to figure this out in case I need to cancel the contract.
Thanks,

I've had no data problems with all my unlocked phones, somethings off in the settings, are you using wap.cingular or isp.cingular for the APN name, you should be using wap unless you're using the $40 a month data plan, if thats not it call CS and have them send the settings OTA (tell them it's a blackjack) and that should be good to go.

then the APN name should be isp.cingular, although the relative speed difference is about 50-100kbps between the 2 apns.

make sure these are the settings you've entered in. depending on the plan (even if it's a pda plan) you may not have isp.
From the "Standby Screen," select Start.
Scroll to and select Settings.
Scroll to and select Connections.
Scroll to and select More.
Select Proxy.
Press Menu.
Select Edit.
Verify the following settings:
Connects From: The Internet
Connects To: WAP network
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com:80
Type: HTTP
Username: leave blank
Password: leave blank
Press Done to finish.
Configure MEdia Net
From the "Standby Screen," select Start.
Scroll to and select Settings.
Scroll to and select Connections.
Scroll to and select GPRS.
Select GPRS.
Select MEdia Net.
Verify the settings:
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.cingular
User Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
IP address: leave blank
Press Done to finish setup.
Configure connections
From the "Standby Screen," press Start.
Scroll to and select Internet Explorer.
At the "Internet Explorer" page, press Menu.
Scroll to and select Options.
NOTE: If the "Internet Explorer" page is not defaulted to "Favorites," you may have to chose Tools>Options.
Scroll to and select Connections.
Verify the following:
Automatically detect settings: Leave Unchecked
Select Network: Wap Network
NOTE: Do not select "Secure WAP Network"
Select Done to finish.
Access MEdia Net or a URL.

my settings were configured exactly as the other post details.
proxy
Connects From: The Internet
Connects To: WAP network
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com:80
Type: HTTP
Username: leave blank
Password: leave blank
gprs
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.cingular
User Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
IP address: leave blank
please correct me if i am wrong: proxy settings remain the same. gprs settings change for apn (isp.cingular) and username (isp@cingulargprs.com). everything else stays the same? internet explorer remains set to connect to wap network.

try also using ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM instead of WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM . it really depends on what APN's Cingular has on your account. There is a Cingular Communication Manager software that you can download .I can't post the link cause this is my first post - but just Google - 'Cingular Communication Manager' and you'll find it.
