what you have to do is, first set the phone settings to VX8500,
next click on view-view filesystem.
click on the new icon on the left side of the screen named "filesystem" then click on the addition sign on the folder. it should say retrieving for a little and should show alot of folders. These are the data folders of the phone. Next click on
Brew-Mod-10889-ringtones. from there all you have to do is drag and drop the mp3 file you want into the right hand side of the screen which is blank usually.
as for the wallpaper i still dont know how to do that, it says it has been blocked by the service provider when you try to do it this way also. |
THANK YOU! I finally got my Japanese music for my ringtone! Although I didnt know about the e-mail method, I bought the Music Essential Kit ($30) from Verizon . BitPim works wonders. I tend to use an audio editor to custom set my ringtone. Thank You for the write up gugmi .

I was also have problems with BitPim. I found out that when you plug in your USB cord that when your Phone opens up VCast, you have to disconnect from VCast to get BitPim to recognize your phone. After that you should be able to get and send information.

I first got my lg vx8550 today. previously i was using the 8500 which i had no problems using bitpim with and i connected with bluetooth. When i tried to pull my filesystem over and got the error that said that it wasn't allowed, i was scared. I found this forum on google. Well on to the good stuff. You can use the 8550 with bluetooth. You must make sure that both bitpim and the bluetooth connection are on the same com port. You can set the com port in the settings on bitpim. after you're phone and computer are paired, select the pull data from phone option in bitpim. This should pull your file system over to bitpim. Only the newest version of bitpim supports the LG VX8550. i believe it is version 1.06. i was able to connect to my phone and use the instructions found in this forum to add ringtones, wallpapers, and music to my phone using blue tooth. Note, Bluetooth is VERY SLOOOW, and i would recommend using the data cable instead. As far as a sd card is concerned. you can also transfer to an sd card in the phone using bluetooth and the data cable, but this is very slow as well. You can purchase a sd card reader that will interface with a usb port on your computer off of newegg for about 10 bucks. let the phone create the file system on the card, then copy the music directly from your computer to card without using the phone and data cable to sync. This will let you copy the data much more quickly.

To put images into the phone, drag and drop into the folder brew/mod/10888 this is where all the other wallpapers are located. i'm pretty sure the image has to be a specific resolution, but i do not know what that resolution is. sorry.

I get this error message when I try to use gugmi01's advice: Failed to auto-detect the port to use. I couldn't detect any candidate ports.

I'm a Mac user, and I just got a VX8550. I figured that downloading ringtones into the phone would be possible , but I just didn't know the specifics. A Google search led me to this thread, and I am happy to report that I've been been able to download ringtones, images, and music using the latest version of BitPim via Bluetooth. As mentioned previously, Bluetooth is a bit slow, but since I'm waiting for my USB cable to arrive (I bought a genuine LG cable off of eBay for a few bucks), I figured that I'd start playing around with the Bluetooth connectivity now.
A few questions:
What sound formats can the VX8550 play? MP3, WAV, and MIDI all work. I haven't tried any others.
Are the built-in ringtones and wallpapers hidden files? When I looked through the phone's entire filesystem with BitPim, I couldn't find them.
After downloading ringtones, etc. into the VX8550, is there any way to tell the VX8550 to internally refresh its filesystem (so you can see the files you just downloaded), other than power-cycling it?
- Dan
