My brother got an iphone and gave me his old Cingular Razr V3. I'd like to activate it on Tmobile prepaid (I use few min so prepaid is best for me, but Cingular prepaid has ltd service in my home area and no service in MT where I travel often). After 6 years on Verizon Prepaid, I'm unfamiliar with the ins and outs of SIM unlocking and swapping. Could someone please help?
1) As my brother swapped service from the Razr to the iPhone and is still an active Cingular customer, is there any chance they'll willingly unlock the Razr for me/him? If so, how should I approach them with this request (store visit? phone call?)? What should I say? Would it be best if he called?
2) Currently when I turn the phone on, it says "unregistered SIM". Does this have anything to do with locked/unlocked status? Is it a sign of problems to come?
3) Assuming the phone IS currently locked but that I can get it unlocked, where is the best place to get a Tmobile prepaid SIM? I have authorized retailers nearby, but the closest Tmobile retail store is a few hundred miles from here.
Any advice or warnings about what I'm trying to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1) They might, if he submits the unlock request. He'll have to call into customer service. If they won't, unlocking the razr your self is fairly simple.
2) No. It just needs a sim to work.
3) You can get a tmobile prepaid sim anywhere. If you look online, you can often catch them selling the Nokia 6030 for $30 with a free $25 prepaid card. Which makes the phone basically free when you add in the $10 included time and you have a pretty good back up phone if something happens to the razr.

Thanks! I called Cingular w/ my brother's account info and they processed a request for a subsidy unlock code and said I should hear back by email in a week. I found several cheap T-mobile prepaid SIM cards with starter minutes at eBay from vendors with good feedback. So once I get the code from Cingular, I'll buy a $5, 30 min SIM and give it a try.
