What is the point of having wifi when you can't use it then? And when you add the data plan, it doesn't do anything to your phone, it makes changes all on tmobiles end so that their system knows you can access the internet. It doesn't send something to your phone that tells the phone you can now use wifi. The point of the wifi is to get you data access if you are in the area of a wifi netork, not charge you more to unlock that feature.

A bit naive of you. If a carrier has the ability to deny you a function unless you purchase a plan, they most certainly will consider doing so. If you call T-Mobile customer service and ask them whether you can use WIFI without a data plan, they will tell you no. (Call post-sales tech support and not pre-sales support. Pre-sales will likely tell you anyhting is possible.) I have already done this and they say that you must have a data plan to use WIFI. Verizon was (or maybe still is) doing the same thing.
As I said earlier, my phone originally had the T-Mobile hotspot plan, and I could access my home wifi network. When I dropped this plan, my home wifi ceased to connect. When I flashed to Windows Mobile 6, I could once again connect to my home wifi for a period of two days. After that, no more connections. Since I have now unlocked my phone, I can once again connect via wifi.
Just because a service is monitored/maintained only on the T-Mobile side of the fence, does not mean that your phone can't be programmed to check back with T-Mobile to allow/disallow certain features that you (and I) think should be inherent to the phone.

Do you understand what an unlock is? It doesn't unlock a feature, which is what it appears you said in the above post. An unlock simply lets the phone accept any sim card.

There are three types of unlock. SIM is only one of them.
So, who out there has WIFI access with a stock T-Mobile Dash and does not have a data plan?
For the record, T-Mobile is blocking my wifi again. I had access for two days, but no longer.

I don't know how T Mobile can block your wifi u could be able to access wi-fi where ever you are and there's a wi fi open or if u have the password to get into a secured wifi .
I mean I have an unlocked phone and I'm out of the US but my wi fi works great i did enter my carriers GPRS info but I made some change and now I can get on
you know there s a place that says access the internet from wap or secure wap I don't know what to choose I know u don't have to enter any username or password to access the GPRS from my carier as yet they have it open for now
Last night i was online but i didn't realise I got on cause the phone was plugged into the computer USB port so that was most likely the reason why I was getting on.

Oravecz, did you find out your answer? I am contemplating buying the dash, but without any data plan, but only if the Wi-fi is still usable.
