Hello. My contract expires this month and I will be getting a new phone. I am thinking about the 700wx or the 700p. They seem to be good candidates. I have a few general questions about Smartphones though.

I see many of them have the weather and news on the home page. Does this require that you have a data service plan or what?

The phone has a built-in GPS system (for E911, I believe) can this be used with software to turn it into a GPS Navigation system, or do I have to buy a bluetooth GPS antenna?

Wifi. Do these models come with Wifi? Is there any kind of card or chip I can add if it doesn't?

I'm not going to get a data plan with the phone, just a normal 1000 minute plan. I don't Text message or send pictures. Will not getting a data plan severely limit my capability with these PDAs?

Which version would you consider? The Windows Mobile 5 version (wx) or the Palm OS 5 version (p)? I like how there are many (free, of course) downloadable games packages on torrents and etc. for the Palm, but what about Windows mobile? Are there more apps for Pocket PC than Palm?

I am leaning toward the Windows Mobile unit because I never have liked the Palm Operating system. Is this a good choice? I want a Smartphone that can be a good phone and at the same time I want a PDA that I can take down notes and to do's as well as play games, listen to music, watch video, etc.

I can't answer all your questions, but I can answer some! I have the Treo 650 for Verizon.
1. You don't need a data plan to view the news or weather. However, there is a cost associated with viewing these without the plan.
2. Not having a data plan just means that when you try to do something that uses data, they charge you (I believe it's a penny and a half per KB). You're never severely limited, just depends what you want to do.
3. I'm using Palm OS so I can't help on that one!
Good luck man!

Thanks! With my phone now, an old LG VX4500, I can use the internet for free (with the exception of used minutes) because I have a Now.WAP setup on my home internet connection. I wonder if the 700 uses WAP for the internet.

As a Verizon customer how or where do I get ringtones for my palm 700wx? I am not very technically inclined so it has to be simple. As I get older the simpler it has to be. Unfortunately Verizon doesn’t allow any downloads.
