That's actually two different questions.
CHEAPER: iRDA. It's older, simpler technology. Plus it's quite a bit easier to set up. And it's compatible with a broader range of technology you currently own (i.e. PDA's, digicams, printers, etc.) so you can use it for more products.
BETTER: Bluetooth. Faster connections, plus you don't have to plant your phone down on the table pointed at a port the whole time. A bit pricey, and not a whole lot of entry-level/mid-level gadgets support it yet.
Suggestion, just look at what gadgets you currently own now and over the next 8-9 months and use that as a barometer to decide which technology is better for your needs.

I would advise you to go in for an IRdA dongle since it's much cheaper and also due to the fact that you own a T610/T616 which has a puny 2MB memory. Hence, you won't be transferring a very large file running into megabytes. For smaller files the transfer time difference between BT and IrdA is not large.

Absolutely right. Backwards compatibility is what rocks with iRDA - you can find tons of devices that support it. How many BT devices do you see yourself owning either now or in the immediate future?

That's exactly what you need man. Unless you plan on buying a laptop with one of those internal IR ports. I really have no idea where you're from, but any reputable brand from any computer hardware store will probably suffice. Although you should shop around on eBay or something, just to get an idea of prices, good brands, disclaimers, etc.

I agree with luckyduck on what he says. You can get an IrdA module from BAFO(a reputed manufacturer)(check out www.bafo.com for more details) for around 20US$ in India. I'm not sure of the prices in your country. The model no. is BF120. It works on the USB2.0 interface.

This is somewhat off-topic, but I really hate laptop manufacturers that put their IR port on the BACK of the unit. Add that to the fact that the T610 IR window is on TOP of the phone, and you have a pretty messed up configuration. Of course, if you don't mind standing up and walking around to the other side of the table to click on "Yes" everytime you send a file then it shouldn't matter much. But to me, it's an outright annoyance.

luckyduck, you get laptops nowdays with IR ports on the side. Take for instance ACi, which provides many ports on the sides of the laptop.

Yup, and you also have certain manufacturers who realize that IR is common technology now and put their IR ports in front, where they belong. Having IR on the side is perfect if you're a Nokia user, since some of their older phones (i.e. 8850, 6510) have theirs on the right side too.
Here in my office, everyone is running on 2-3 year old Compaq and Dell laptops, and the ports are on the back. Annoying as heck, but I can't complain since I haven't yet gotten around to buying my own IR.
