Hi all,
I have heard about issues with att 8525 where people would surf the web, thinking they are connecting from Wifi, but then they get crazy bills because it turns out that they were connected from the GPRS or Edge. or the phone would connect to any Edge network as its first choice over Wi-fi because it was designed to automatically connect for convenience. so you have to keep checking and canceling the Edge connection.
now I am thinking about buying T-mobile dash. I will not have the data plan. I just want to go by the free wireless at school. My question is can I turn GPRS and/or Edge connection (I am not very familiar with the tech details) forever so that I will not have to worry about an issue similar to what I described above. thanks in advance

I thought tmobiles network was set up so that if you don't have data access on your account then you can not access anything via edge.

Since T-Mobile doesn't charge by the kilobyte (other than when roaming internationally), I don't see how you could incur hidden charges. You can with AT&T because it will let you surf by the kilobyte.
There are ways to check to see how you are connecting to the web on a Dash. One way is to go to a web page that shows your the the IP address you are using. Connecting over T-Mobile should show IP addresses that will look different from wifi hotspots.
In your case, though, I don't think you need to worry because without a data plan, the only way you should be able to connect is with wifi.
