Getting a new phone will not void your contract. However, unless you had phone insurance on an AT&T phone, AT&T will not help you in financing a new phone; the cost of buying a new phone will be entirely your responsibility. Nonetheless, buy a new phone as you will - the phone you use has nothing to do with your contract length.
Peace,
Jacob
