One question : Why cant I set as a ringtone the music file I just transfered to my phone (to phone memory) ?

If its a branded phone, it probably has the same ringtone limitation as the rest of them.

cut it down so that it's less than 600k in size, usually 30 seconds or less is a good rule of thumb.

Can anyone recommend a good "Free" program to use to cut a song down to 30 seconds for use as a MP3 ringtone in a sony Ericson w580i

there is another audio editing program I have been using for a while. It is very simple and I mean very simple. If all you want to do is clip a song for your phone use mp3 knife. It is free at download dot com just search for "mp3 knife".
