Thanks to everyone who posted here with the suggestions. After applying what I read here and in some other threads here is what worked for me:
With my sd card in my phone I formated it then placed it in an adapter I have- you can find these on the internet under $20.
I made a copy of my mp3 ringtone and then renamed it as a .mid
I moved the copy ****.mid to the sd card into the my sounds folder.
I placed the sd card in the phone.
When I went to the folder under memory- and make sure you have switched your memory to the card- I then selected move the file to the phone memory.
Once that was done I went to create a new picture message. In the contacts I put my cell number and then I went down a little further to the sounds section. Here I browsed to the sound folder under my phone memory.
I then sent the message.
Once received I was give the option to save as a ringtone.
I really hope I didn't leave a step out. My hubby was really happy I got a really cool ringtone on his phone for him
btw- I tried sending to myself through verizon's site, and tried just putting it on there as a mp3 but nothing else worked.
I hope this works for someone and saves them some time.
I'd like to report that as of Sept 1st, 2008, this still works.
Thank you Nette for sharing this helpful tip.
I'd like to point that that this is probably the only way to get custom ringtones since Verizon upgraded their software and locked the phones down, thus making any third party software (like BitPim) useless. If you currently use BitPim and had not had any problems with your phone, don't go to Verizon to do an upgrade as it will lock your phone up.
Also, the one step I did not do in the above was convert to a Midi file. I left mine as an MP3 and it worked just as well.

lg vx8350.
use bitpim and your microsd card. create a folder named "ringers" on the card and put the card in the phone. open bitpim and "get phone data" and then go into the ringers folder. then click on "add ringer". select an mp3 from your computer (or more than one). then once it appears in the ringers folder on bitpim, "send phone data"
simple as that.
