My parents have an UX4650. They've asked me (I'm The Techie)
if there is a way to use it as a dial-up modem to enable them to
get internet on their laptop when they're out in the boonies with
no land-line available. They have an ISP with nationwide dial-up
access points. They have a laptop with wi-fi and a standard
dial-up modem. I do not know if the laptop has bluetooth.
I could probably figure this out if I could find the telephone's manual
anywhere (but it doesn't seem to exist), and maybe if I could hold
the phone in my hot little hands (well, my hands aren't that little),
but they and the telephone are in California, and I'm in Texas, so
that won't work (at least for a while).
So -- can anyone tell me if this telephone has the capability of
acting as a modem, and if so, how I would go about connecting
it to the computer so it can pass the data along?
Thanks much!
thomas.

who is their wireless provider?
are you sure it's not a VX-4650?

Well, he *said* it was a UX4650, but Us and Vs often look alike.
So it probably is a VX4650.
They are with Verizon -- but I don't think that matters; they
don't want to subscribe to a wireless internet plan, they want
to use the phone as a modem and dial in to their POTS-based
ISP, then shoot the data somehow to the computer.
I saw some references in sites I looked up that said it might
be possible if the phone had fax capabilities, but I can't find
any mention of fax in the VX4650 manual I found online.

the carrier matters cause then we can then figure out the phone model for sure. in this case it's definatly a VX4650 if it's VZW. I'll look into it & see what I can find.

ok, looks like all they need is a usb cable & data suite software that will allow internet dial up on device. Both can be found here:
http://www.buywirelessnow.com/lg/buy/accessories/cat/1012/model/1012_2 53405
Now, according to LG that should work fine but VZW is notorius for disabling features on phones so you have to use their product/service instead.
Verizon states you should buy a mobile office kit (which include cable & software and is $39.99) and use their internet connection (National Access) which comes out to about $2/day ($59.99 month - can be prorated).
If it were me I'd probably go with the second option because it's unlimited data for appx $2/day. the first would use up all their plan (talk time) minutes.
