Hello folks!

So I just talked to T-Mobile and got an unlock code for my phone. However, it suggests putting in a foreign SIM card, which I don't have. What do you suggest I do?

(Here's a copy of the email they sent me, with the valuable numbers deleted):

T-Mobile Sim Unlock Request
Sim Unlock Reference: xxx
IMEI: xxx

Unlock Code: xxx

Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. Below you will see the Instructions for unlocking your Motorola device.

Before you start you must have a foreign (non-T Mobile) SIM card entered into the handset. If the display reads "Enter Special Code", enter the unlock code and press "OK". If the display does not ask for Special code, please enter the instructions below.

1.Press the Menu key on the keypad, and then quickly press xxx.You should see the Enter Security Code screen.
2.Enter xxx and select OK.
3.Scroll to Unlock SIM select it.
4.Enter the SIM unlock code and select OK.
5.Press the End key to return to the main screen.

NOTE: If the phone displays, "Please wait to enter special code" or "Contact service provider," you will have to wait for it to change back. Please be aware that the phone must stay powered on to do this. If the battery is low, be sure to plug it in. It could take 15 minutes to an hour to change back. If the phone does not change back, the handset will need to be replaced.

Thank You,

Hi,
first you have to check if your phone is sim-locked, this means that
you can only put a sim-card from one provider inside the phone, to make it work. providers are i.e. t-mobile. Motorola or Razr are no providers, it's a brand and company who are producing mobile phones and not "sim-cards".
easy you can check that if you can find 2 friends with different providers, so you check those 2 cards, and if both are working your phone is unlocked, and you can put any providers card inside you want. if not and there is "subsidy code" written. you have to unlock your phone, there are many several ways to do so. but i think it is not allowed to post here about unlocking, so i will
not get into details with it. if u need to unlock, try to do it by code and not by testpoint or cable because this can make your phone dead, and your warranty will be lost!

I will verify that this is correct. Just find a friend with another GSM service provider and put their sim in your "T-Mobile Locked" phone. Then follow the procedure emailed to you by T-Mobile

I know this is necroposting, but just FYI (I have tmo and unlocked my razr this way) for anyone who stumbles across this later.

You don't need the other SIM card to unlock it. (If you want to test that it works though, you do) Just do it with your native (t-mobile) sim in it.

When it says the "menu" key, that's the middle-top button, NOT the center of the 4-way pad. The 073887* code is the same on all phones.

So is the 000000 that you put in as the "security code".

And. if you want to re-lock it, you can just repeat the same procedure (with "reset sim lock" instead of "unlock sim"

Cheers.

The secret to making this work is the words "and then QUICKLY press 073887* "
If you do it with a pause between the menu appearing and starting the key pad entry of the numbers 073887*, it will fail. Their must be no pause when the screen appears. I just got my unlock code from T-Mobile via email after requesting it, and had the same problem. T-Mobile customer service failed to fiqure it out that NO PAUSE when entering the numbers 073887*.
The key again to making this work is go to menu page (Center of the top three buttons, the numbers will not show on the screen when typing as it stays in the menu display of all the menu items) and quickly start the number sequence 073887*. Then the hidden menu appears, enter 000000 and OK. Then enter the Unlock Code number supplied by T-Mobile and enter OK (Top right button). It worked for me after I eliminated the pause by remembering the number sequence and not looking at the page for the number, then entering it. That caused the pause.
