I just bought the iphone and so far so good. I was wondering if there was any way around making making your own ringtones rather then purchase them thru ITUNES? Just curious. Thanks.

There are a couple of 3rd-party software solutions that are supposed to work, but they've been thrown a curve by the latest Apple firmware update for the iPhone (1.1.1). I bought "iphone ringtone maker" and just as I installed it, the new firmware release hit and it wouldn't work. I did buy a couple of ringtones from Apple, but the volume of the tones is so low that it's not fooling with. I've been pretty disappointed with the phone's ringtone volume overall and this hasn't helped.
The way Apple has approached the whole ringtone thing is pretty dumb and self-serving on Apple's part. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, but as with anything really cool, there's some really dumb and shortsighted things about it. Maybe they'll loosen up and offer some options with another firmware update. Here's hoping.
(WAIT! I just noticed Ducedec's sticky about making custom tones. Gonna try it thi weekend when I get home)
