Yes, unless you have an unlimited data. That and unlimited texting are 2 different things.

Actually, IM is considered as a message with AT&T. If you have an AIM client right on your phone, it won't use any data at all; if you connect to AIM via MEdia Net, then the only data you'll use is when you are connecting/disconnecting from AIM. Once you're in the application, each message sent/recieved is billed as a "message", so if you have unlimited messaging, it WILL cover it.
Note however, that the $5 add-on for unlimited "mobile-to-mobile" messaging does NOT cover instant messaging. If you have the $19.99/month Messaging Unlimited or $29.99/month FamilyTalk Messaging Unlimited, they WILL cover all of your IM, except for the data used to connect/disconnect as stated above.
The Unlimited plans (the $19.99 and $29.99) that AT&T offers all cover text messaging, multimedia messaging, and instant messaging; so a text, picture, video, or instant message are all just considered "one message".

Hmm, ok, fair enough, we've always been told differently but since I'm up in Canada and don't get to use the service myself, I'll agree (I always thought it made more sense that way, but was always told otherwise).
But the big part, the messaging, is still covered by the unlt messaging package.
Maybe instant messaging is where all those 2-3kb charges every few minutes on people's bills are coming from that I've never been able to explain before. Hmm.
