If I buy an old T-mobile phone from my brother can I activate it with a new T-Mobile to go simm card? I found the cards on Craigslist. I tried my Tracphone card, but the screen just stays white when I turn it on. The thing is that my brothers phone probably had an overdue balance when it got shut off if that makes a difference. When you turn the phone on with his simm it says all of this t-mobile stuff, than it says unregistered simm. Any help would be great. I just don't want to give him the 50 bucks and then call t-mobile to get it turned on and have them say I owe them x amount of $$$$. Thank you for the help.

The previous owner's account balance has nothing to do with the phone's ability to be used in the future when using a GSM phone like this. The "Unregistered SIM" message means that you're using a SIM card for which this phone is not intended. You will need to have the phone unlocked and it should work.

So you say it will need to be unlocked even though my new simm card would be a tmobile prepaid simm?

The Sim could be unregistered if the account to which it was linked to on t-mobile no longer exists.

Yeah, it sounds like the old account is cancelled (hence "phone probably had an overdue balance when it got shut off"), that's why you're getting the "Unregistered SIM" error with his old SIM card. You should be able to activate a prepaid SIM card and then use that phone no problem.

The phone should work with T-Mobile TOGO because you can use any T-Mobile phone with a T-Mobile Sim Chip.
Even if there was a balance left on the previous owner's account, that information is tied to the sim of the previous owner. It has nothing to do with the phone.
