For T Mobile contracts does this mean that I can be using Sprint or Verizon coverage on my phone and I will be billed as if I were on the T mbooile network under my contract?

It is impossible to roam on verizon and sprint due to technology differences (cdma vs tmo's gsm). But yes, you can roam on any USA gsm carrier and incur no roaming charges. As long as you are in the country, and have signal, you can call for no additional charge on a national plan.

I travel all over the country, most often to remote locations, for work. My Tmobile phone constantly switches to AT&T, Cingular, and even something called "USA 500."
I've never incurred a charge for roaming. I can't check my voicemail though!

USA 500 was the temporary network designator just after the merge of ATT and Cingular.I didnt think that it was still around. you **may** need a sim update to reload your PLMN from tmobile

To check your voicemail, call your number and press pound to get to the password prompt.
