As of the new year, I cannot receive calls and when I try to make any calls I get an automated message telling me that "We do not recognize your phone as an authorized user." I tried to check my account online, but since my number apparently no longer exists Verizon won't let me in. Calls placed to my number go to voice mail (which I cannot access).
My bills are paid and my contract runs for another six months (or maybe a year and a half; their obnoxious salespeople call too early in the morning for me to be fully aware of what I'm agreeing to). What is going on here? I sent a message to the Verizon service people ("Most customers will receive a response within 24 hours") and have been surfing cell phone forums, looking to see if I'm the only person with this problem. So far, nothing.
Nobody out there have this going on? Is this the result of some Verizon computer screw-up that killed my service? Am I on a CIA hit list, and this is the first step in freezing my bank accounts, erasing my Social Security Number, and making the world believe that I never existed? It's 3am and I'm in a wireless twilight zone.

I tried turning it off and on again. . . customer care doesn't have any people until 6am, and I couldn't access my online account information--it said that my cell phone number was not found.
The phone started working again this morning. I received a form e-mail from "Sharlie" in which she addressed me as Mrs. and told me that many people had interrupted service at midnight due to the number of calls being made. She also was kind enough to provide me with a list of payment and account information numbers that not only were irrelevant to my problem, but which I clearly could not dial if my phone was not working. No explanation of how an overloaded network at midnight could cause an authentication error at 3:30. Thanks, Verizon.

Re-run the initial programming (INIT)
dial *228
follow the directions
and it should do everything for you.
it won't do anything but re-authenticate your phone with the network.
