I used to change the lock code on peoples phones if they left it default. Nothing would happen until there phone powered down. When they tried to turn it on next they'd need to enter the code, and the default one no longer worked. Some people I told, but a couple slipped past.

*Greeting* How can I help you?
Teenager: Yeah, my phone doesn't work.
Me: What doesn't work with the phone sir?
Teenager: It doesn't work.
Me: Ok, and you verify the account?
Teenager: Huh?
Me: The account holder's name.
T: John
M: John who?
T: I dunno.
M: Well, that is not the first name. What is the number?
T: I dunno. Can you tell me?
M: Well sir, I wouldn't be able to do that w/o VID.
T: John is my friend. He bought the phone from this guy.
M: Ok sir, unless you can vid, I can't really help you.
T: *click*
I figured out his "friend" must have bought a stolen phone or something. Probing REALLY does help.

If by probing, you mean beating idiots with large bludgeoning items, then yes, it can be EXTREMELY helpful.

Client- Um, you guys like cut off my service or whatever and I like. I dunno, wanna know why?
Me- May I have your name please (just as an aside, I haaaate when people call and don't identify themselves, especially when the account doesn't pop, because I can't see what they're talking about!)
C -- Ummm. Ti---Diane.
Me -- Diane.?
C -- Ohh (giggle) Smith
Me -- Alright Diane, may I have your pin number please
C -- Oh, um, I like don't remember.
Me -- Ok, we'll just verify some other information to confirm your identity. what is your mailing address? (she provides it). Home phone #? (provides it). And your birthday please Diane?
C -- Ummmmmmm. I like don't remember or whatever. *click*
So clearly this is not a 47 year old woman, but her daughter the user pretending to be mom. She has not paid the bills in 4+ months and has been suspended for a couple weeks.
Doesn't mom call in two weeks later, and I got her! As it turns out, the daughter had been hiding the bills as well as not paying them. So I took the liberty of informing her that her daughter had called in and fraudulently identified herself as Diane. Next thing I hear is "you little bitch, I can't believe y---" *click*
What the hell makes them think we don't know? Stupid teenagers!

I think all the extra hormones get in the way of firing synapses, as a result teenagers likely drop in the neighborhood of 50 iq points until the hormones start to level out. Sometimes the damage done during this period in there life is permanent, and they in effect never recover.

As an addendum, I knew my fathers and mothers birthday, but I would have been stumped had you asked social security number.
