I am not an expert, but in my experience, once your two year commitment is up, you are a free agent! If you paid the retail price for a phone, you buy it with no contract (you sign the contract to get the discount) and you can just call up Verizon and tell them you want to put your phone number on that phone.
I bought a phone on eBay and transferred a phone number to it - took about 10 minutes with a Verizon operator. My plan continues on with the new phone, with the same prices as I had under the contract, but I can cancel that line at any time without penalty since my contract is up.
Verizon should be able to confirm this - call 611 and ask them.

If you're willing to buy a new phone at full retail, then you don't need to renew your plan at all. You can just pay for your current plan on a month to month basis. (When it expires).
If you wanted to buy a phone at the discount price, then you would have to be in a contract. The one year discount price is about seventy bucks more than the two year price.
Since you're thinking of going to a one year plan from a two year, they'll probably make you change your plan. So if you have features you like now, you'll more than likely lose them if you change.

*** what ever you do though, remember this ***
The price difference between full retail price and 2 year contract price is often greater than $175 (the max Early Termination Fee [ETF]). Don't forget to add in the rebates ($50) & New Every 2 discount ($50-100), which you're not eligable for on 1 or no contract upgrades.
So say you sign up for another 2 years and decide you want to cancel service 6 months down the road. with variable ETFs you will get charged less of that $175 for every month you fullfill.
so if you think abouts it NOT taking the 2 year price is really a sucker move.
