As the topic title says, my 2 year contract has finally come to an end. However, I am left with several questions regarding what I can do. I am hoping someone in this forum can help a phone newbie out here. Thanks in advance.
First things first, I don't plan on switching carriers, if that isn't clear. I know Verizon offers the new every 2 deal, where they sell me a phone at a cheaper price, at the cost of entering another 2 year contract I believe. <__< I really don't want to enter another 2 year contract with the same phone, so I don't think I like this option much.
However, one of my friends was telling me how I could purchase a phone compatible with Verizon's network, and have them activate it for me so it works with my current number/plan?. I am assuming this doesn't bind me in some contract, meaning I can still use the new every 2 if I want later? while I can use a new phone as long as it's compatible? So if I pick up a phone somewhere(ie eBay) I can use it with my current number as long as I tell Verizon?
I am somewhat confused about this, but with your help, I think I can make up my mind<__< eventually.
Also, if this is posted somewhere, or on this site someplace, I apologize for not being able to find it, but I did search(albeit not very well) and came up with nothing.
Thanks in advance for any help

hello,
in short, you are correct. The only way you extend your contract with verizon now is to upgrade your phone with a discount or if you accept a promo (i.e 1 month free for renewal).
if you're not planning to upgrade but instead want to get a new phone from a 3rd party you can without effecting your contract. but be very careful about the phone you chose, when we say it must be Verizon compatable, it has to be an actual phone that at one time was sold by verizon.
Also, get the serial number (ESN) of the phone you're looking to buy and call verizon before purchasing anything. there can make sure it's not someone's lost/stolen phone.
Last check out this other thread about upgrading. i posted some info to consider about contracts, NE2 discounts, etc.

Ahhh, I see. Well, thanks for the information.
My friend told me about the ESN thing. I'll keep that in mind. So I just need to call Verizon and ask them to check the ESN, would I just call their customer support number, or is there some special number?
Another quick question if you don't mind, or anyone else that can answer. So if I get reenrolled in a contract for a cheaper phone right now, could I upgrade such phone without affecting my contract?
If the plan matters, it's a family plan and I'm the primary line.

i'm not sure what you're asking here but let me restate the facts and that may clear up your question.
-If you supply your own equipment (buy a phone off ebay, friend, whatever) you do not renew your contract and you can "upgrade" thru verizon anytime at a later date
-anytime you upgrade your phone (meaning you take a discount off retail price) with verizon you will likely sign a 2 year contract
-If you sign a new contract for a different reason like accepting a promo, you're still eligable to upgrade anytime later (but must sign a new contract at that time)

VZQ now allows yu bring your :own" phone to activate VZW service. They will run a test to see if it is compatible and if it is, you cn use it.
