Ah. I'm sorry about that - I didn't read your post in its entirety. So many people just slap up a response without checking out the links (or reading around) that my first reaction is to re-direct them to existing posts. I see now that you didn't deserve that. Sorry.
The first thing you need to do is determine what version of the RAZR you have. This is best done by matching your software version with the model number. Simply to to Menu->Settings->Phone Statue->Other Information->S/W Version
On my old RAZR, the software version is R374_G_0E.42.15R.
If I look at the MotoX Motorola forums, I can see that R374 corresponds with the standard RAZR V3.
This is important because I want to make sure to flash my phone with the right software. The wrong software kills the phone.
After that, enter one of the forums (here at Mobiledia, Moto X or elsewhere) and follow the instructions. Mobiledia's Motorola forum has the thread on flashing/flexing the Vxxx series phone - the 'xxx' simple refers to the model number. The RAZR's model number is V3 - so you can follow the instructions here.
I made a big error in not referring you to this site: www.hackthev3.com. This may be the only place you really need to go to flash your RAZR. Its where I learned everything about modifying my phone. Check it out first and see if it isn't as helpful for you, too.
Editing/changing your phone's settings won't erase anything. Flashing/flexing your phone usually does erase your phone's settings, contacts, java programs (et cetera).
Peace,
Jacob
Hmm. it seems to me that the best way to go about all of this (unlocking web session access) might be to simply bypass any flashing/flexing and directly edit the settings. Its a 10-step process that takes about 15 minutes.
Assuming you have the basic RAZR (software R374_*_*_*.*.*.*, follow these instructions - if not, STOP here)
*WARNING/DISCLAIMER/CAVEAT/"I'm not responsible" message*
This is the quick method of solving your particular problem. I've done it and I know it works. Nonetheless, I simply won't take responsibility for anything that goes wrong. If you have Motorola Phone Tools, now would be the time to back up your contacts, ringtones & videos.
- To do this, your battery should be FULLY charged. If you lose power while changing a setting, things could get ugly. It probably won't happen, but I'm compelled to mention the risk.
- I've only done this with Windows XP. If you don't have Windows XP, its best that you don't do this without consulting folks at the forums above who have your version of Windows.
Okay. Onto the work:
To do this you need to pieces of (freely accessible) software:
Motorola Software Update
P2K Advanced Editor
#1. Download & install both programs.
#2. Run Motorola Software Update.
#3. Using a mini usb cable, connect your RAZR to your computer
Windows (XP, I assume!) will detect & install the following new hardware:
Accessories Interface
Data Logging MCU Interface
Test Command Interface
Wait for the hardware to be completely installed and Windows to display the "your hardware is installed and ready to be used" message.
#4. Leaving Motorola Software Update alone (its still running, but not doing anything), run P2K Advanced Editor.
#5. In the upper left hand corner, click "Connect in P2k Mode"
The red dot should turn green & in the lower right-hand corner, it should read "P2K: Connected"
#6. Go to the menu item: Phone Services->SEEM functions->SEEM 32 Functions
A window will come up
#7. In the "Filter" area, type in "web" and click "Find"
A list will come up on the top - the fifth item should read "WEB_SESSIONS_MENU_AVAILABLE"
#8. Click the button "Read from Phone"
In that list above, on the right, there will appear a bunch of checkboxes alongside each menu item, the web sessions menu available item should b empty.
#9. Click the checkbox next to "WEB_SESSIONS_MENU_AVAILABLE" (so that it is checked - you may have to use your spacebar, rather than click) and then click "Write to Phone"
#10. Click "Close", Go to File->Exit (P2K Advanced Editor will shut down) and close Motorola Software Update by clicking "End". Disconnect your phone and restart it (power it down, power it back).
The menu item "Web Sessions" should now be available. Depending on the way your carrier editing the software, it will be available under your internet section (Menu->Web Access/MEdia Net/other personalized internet name) or under the settings area (Menu->Settings->WEB ACCESS).
Now go configure your browser!

don't worry, you're a big help!
those 10 steps sound simple enough to get my Web menu in there, but what wire do I need to connect this thing to my computer? (and can it be found at my local radio shack?)
and what are the options for backing up my pictures on here? my contacts are all on SIM, so those are safe (right?)
thanks.

You contacts are safe on your SIM - only your phone is affected by all this action.
The necessary cable is a Mini USB cable - it plugs into the same slot as your charger. You can buy it one Radio Shack/Best Buy/Office Max/Office Depot for about $20. Home Depot (an unlikely supplier of computer cables) offers one of under $10. As an aside, Home Depot also sells network cables at a ridiculously low price - compared to the minimum of $20 you'll spend at any computer or office store.
There is a catch, I'm afraid. I've found that sometimes (only twice, but still), the phone is picky about which cable it will use. If you want absolutely sure results with connecting your phone, pay the full $20 and buy a mini-usb cable from Motorola itself. The cable you want is on the bottom middle - they call it a "micro USB data cable", but its truly called a mini usb cable.
The best way to back up anything on your phone (ringtones, video, contacts - but not Java games/programs [grr...]) is using Motorola's Phone Tools Software. Unfortunately, they seem to be out of stock for the download version; you'd have to buy the cd and wait for delivery. But it is worth the easy of use.
However. If you're looking for a fast solution and have a willingness to work with a slightly less intuitive program, there is always P2K Tools. A new version (VS) has been released since I last used it, which makes it a lot prettier and somewhat easier. Still, you'll be literally looking at the very files in the phone - they aren't named nicely, so you'll have to scroll through to find your files. But I've got instructions below.
But you've got to know that this is a fairly powerful tool; careless clicks are significant and could cause headache in repairs or even an unrepairable phone. What we're doing - copying files - is actually very safe, because we're not changing anything on the phone. But with this program you have access to every corner of your phone. Change or delete things at your own risk (please don't!).
The download for the latest (as well as the earlier) version is available at Motorola E398 Modders. This program doesn't need to install - its just a zip file that you can dump anywhere - I recommend unzipping it to a new folder on your desktop for easy access.
#1. [edited - step not necessary] Run P2KTools VS.
- The program should immediately detect your phone. You'll know if it has by the green dot in the bottom left and the words "Connected P2k"
#2. Click on "File Manager" (upper left) and then click "Refresh"
- Let it do its scan of your phone. A folder tree (like when you are browsing your computer's files) will appear. This is quite truly every file that is on your phone. Don't delete anything!.
#3. "a" is the very root of your phone. You want to browse to "mobile". From there, the three folders that concern us are "Audio", "video" and "picture". Click on "Type" (upper right) in each folder to sort the files according to type. Then find your files. Your audio files will me mp3 files. Your pictures will be jpg files. Your videos will be 3gp files. If you've ever used the Motomixer to make tones on your phone, they will be mix files - but almost nobody uses that function, so if you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry about it.
To copy your files, you can select some or all of them (CTRL & right-click) and then click "Download". You'll be able to put them in any folder you like - I recommend the desktop for easy access.
#3a (Bonus/extra) If you have any Java games/programs that you've purchased over the internet, this program will allow you to back them up as well (although any settings or saved games will be lost - its unavoidable). In the folder marked "kjava", there are files with the type of "jar". Sort by type and select all of them. Download them to your desktop. If you don't care about the games/programs, just let it be.
#4. To close the program, simply click on the huge phone button (upper left) and select "exit".
#5. Close Motorola Software Update and you're done!

Hmmm. It looks like P2K Tools VS also allows you to backup your contacts. Who knew? Pretty easy, too. If you'd like to do that, follow these instructions.
#1. [edited - step not necessary] Run P2K Tools VS.
#2. Click the phone icon (upper left) and select "AT mode"
- If the program successfully connects to your phone, the dot in the lower right corner should be blue and read "Connected AT". Give it a little bit: it takes about 15 seconds on my computer.
#3. Click "Addressbook" and then "Refresh".
#4. Highlight "Phone" or "SIM" and then click "Backup". Save the file somewhere accessible.
Its not as easy as Motorola's Phone Tools, but its darn close!

I haven't gotten a chance to get the cable yet. My one trip to radio shack found them closed. I hope to get one in a few minutes. Thanks for the help so far.

Okay. So P2K VS isn't detecting my phone. When I plug it in, Windows says found new Hardware Motorola Phone, and then the Found New Hardware Wizard pops up. Do I need to do something with this Wizard?

Okay. I pulled some magic and am up and running. Backed up my pictures pretty easily, trying to add the Web menu and hit some trouble.
Can't find your 6th step.
#6. Go to the menu item: Phone Services->SEEM functions->SEEM 32 Functions
A window will come up
Where is this menu item?
