Over the last three or four months, I have a rather severe problem with calls made to a particular friend on her cellular phone. The calls will sometimes not connect or will only connect for a few minutes before one party can not hear the other (usually I'm able to hear her, but not vice versa). We have both kept track of our call quality with other calls and have not had any problems with our calls, even internationally.
For example, today I called her, was connect and after a few minutes she stopped being able to hear me. I called back and it happened again. This repeated itself almost ten times. Truly.
I have AT&T, she has Verizon. My parents have Verizon and I have no trouble calling or staying connected with them. She has friends who have AT&T and has no troubles with them either.
Now I have an O2 Jet, which is not an AT&T branded phone. I do have three other phones that I can try out, but only one is AT&T branded - and thats a Motorola C139.which is a fairly low-end phone (I used it when my RAZR was stolen).
I recently called AT&T to ask for a 'single push' in order to update the PLMN, but that didn't work (something about it being denied/blocked/not permitted). I don't know if thats relevant.
Obviously, calling AT&T is the best route to go from here; I post to see if anyone has had similar issues (where one phone number has been the cause of so much trouble) or any suggestions.
Respectfully,
Jacob M.

this sounds more device related than anything.
what are the frequncies available for the jet. tri-band or quad?
what is the displayed signal strength on the jet vs the C139?
do you have any connectivity problems with anyone else (att or ANY other carrier)

The O2 Jet is a quad-band phone (850/900/1800/1900). The signal strength is about four bars consistently. For the Motorola C139, the signal strength is about two bars consistently.
I don't have connectivity problems aside from this one phone number.

I went ahead and called AT&T a couple days ago about this problem. The gal I talked with was very courteous and apologetic, but was unable to offer any advice beyond power cycling my phone more often.
She was kind enough to leave a note in my file so that if I call again I won't have to explain the issue all over again.
Similarly (in a different phone call) AT&T couldn't deliver a PLMN update (via 'single push') to my SIM card. That was recommended to me in a different thread, but perhaps its somehow related?
In any case, I will hope that this resolves itself and keep a pulse on it.

Would it be possible to have them do the update with your sim in the C139? Maybe the phone itself is not letting the update happen, while the connection could be better once it has? Don't know much about GSM but thought I'd throw that out there.

have you given your IMEI (*#06# will display it on your screen) of your O2 jet. this will resend a plmn when entered in the system
