It's come down to these two on Verizon for me. I basically use a phone for calls and texting. Other stuff is nice and can be a factor but won't be the main factor. The 740 does have the qwerty keypad but just through farting around in the store I was actually able to hammer out texts faster on the LG, but that may be because I'm used to it. I actually thought the keys on the LG were nice and big and I don't think I'd have problems with the flat surface. The keys on the Samsung are kind of small which is what I hate on my current phone.

My current phone is a Katana 2 from Sanyo/Sprint and I hate it. My previous phone was a Motorola E815 and I loved it. So that's where I'm coming from. The things I hate about my new phone that I loved on my old one are the keys are too small/not placed well. Also you can't set it between loud/vibrate/silence on the outside like you can on most Motorola's, you have to open it up and go to settings. Also I hate how when someone calls or texts it displays the number in huge text and the name is really small. On the 815 I liked how it just said "Ashley calling" or whatever.

I basically just hate texting on my phone, so I guess the Qwerty keypad should be the winner but the buttons are small. The LG is pretty nice looking and has big buttons, which are nice. But I imagine I'd get used to the keypad on the Samsung. But I also like the little things the UI. My current phone is a royal pain to navigate, like I said I really hate how I have to set it on vibrate/silence/loud. Things like that can be difference makers to me.

i'd go with the 8700, way more style & it's an LG.

I agree that the keys are too small on the 740 and i'm not a big guy. i also find it annoying that you'll go through menus with the phone flipped open one way, then you get to where you want to be & and it says to open fip the other way. but then you have to start from your home screen again.

The VX8700 has the better camera, but it gets hot sometimes near the battery. And the sound isn't the best there is either. It's lower than I would like and when turned up the speaker sounds like it's trying too hard. Samsung would be nicer if the keyboard weren't so small. For the prices there are equally decent devices on the network, I recommend using the 30 days grace period.
