Manator means well but doesn't seen to grasp what's really going on. right now even the most hsdpa can promise, even if we went to the most advanced version, which is still in laboratories and not in the field, is 14mbits. and even if att's network was fully fitted to run hsdpa, there are still two things holding it's speed way back. one is the device your using. you can only transmit and recieve as fast as your device let's you. two, is the network backbone itself. this is where verizon and sprint will remain on top for data speeds. they are using fiber optics all the way to the last mile, while att is only using fiber optics on it's main servers, and copper wire to it's last mile. a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. no matter how fast air interface they use, it will always be limited to these two factors.

I'm still interested in how those speeds tests that are being used, area/location. The idea that they are not advertised because they are not guaranteed is of no interest or relevance. It is known that you are able to see speeds higher than advertised and speeds lower than expected. I'm really interested in knowing how you are arriving at those speed measurements and how you are connecting your device to your computer.
I'm guessing there is something wrong with the way that people are arriving at the conclusion that they have that speed.

Exactly. if he's using one of those online bandwidth meters if may have information stored in his cache that alters the results of his test. or if he's using a proxy based browser like opera mini that could alter his results also.

In the end it doesn't matter what it connects at. Any of you remember dial-up? My modem used to connect at 56k, but my download speed still stuck to around 3-5k. My cable used to peak at 300k but then slow to around 90-100k, by DSL peaks at 150k then drops to about 75-85k. The last Sprint card that I sold started slower, but continued to get faster the entire time I was downloading, peaking at around 72k, but that was in a fairly small area.

Good. And MCGIRK, Are those your current dsl speeds? i hope not. i haven't seen speeds that slow in four years. our lowst dsl tier here is 756k, so you get about 700k, since the max tier is 16mbps for dsl.

I live in the boonies, but the speed it says it is connected doesn't matter to me, it's the speed I download at, and that rarely stays above 80k.

if the lowest tier is set at 756k, you'd rarely/never see 700k. you'd generally never get that close to maximum throughput.
mcgirk, mine's similar. mine tops out at 285k but i rarely download above 30k consistently.
I think you guys misunderstand bandwidth. just because you only download at a certain speed doesn't mean that's your bandwidth. download speeds will never reach max due to network congestion, your hosts upload speed, your computer, and many more factors. say your connection is 756k. in theory, you can download up to that fast. now if you download one file and it stays around 123k, you can still download more files and surf the web using your remaining bandwidth, which would be 633K, in theory, if you are not already using any bandwidth at all, such as messenger programs, games, or a web browser, or even windows update or other programs thatlike to run in the background.

I understand bandwidth for what I need it for, downloading, because that is what is most important. Who cares what the max bandwidth is, what I care about is download speed, which stays around 70k.
