I currently have a 3g phone (Sony Ericsson W810i) I use it to tether when out of the office. Our area does not have 3G at this time (so I guess 3G is meaninless on my phone at this time) Is there a way to get a faster connection than 114k with this phone.
Once 3G in place I assume this would not change regarding tethering as the laptop modem setting seem to limit this, is this correct?
One more thing, can you get a faster connection with a smartphone as apposed to a regular phone when connected to your laptop?

nope. its the network available to that spot. if there is no 3G indicator no0 3G speed.
btw the W810i is an EDGE device.ergo it cannot connect 3g anyway. you would need at minimum a 3g phone to tether right off then the 3g coverage as well

I live in Des Moines, Iowa and I was in Kansas City last weekend and I actually got to try 3G out for more than five minutes (remember when I drove 40 miles out of my way to use it.which was pointless I know.) I tried it out (internet, mobiTV, etc.) and it seemed as if the edge network in Des Moines ran just as efficient if not better than 3G (with Laptops it may be a different story), but I can wait for 3G considering if I want internet (I still don't know why people buy laptop cards and pay 60 bucks a month unless their office doesn't have internet, which is unlikely) when there are so many wi-fi spots available in this world!
