Seems like if they think a firmware update would correct the issue, they could send out a text message to the users who have the phones in question instructing them to go to whatever-the-website-is . c o m
But that's why I am not the department head of AT&T.
The comment that Geri O made about other phone brands & models brings out another point. I know a few folks that have other brand phones that have similar issues (but get no Unregistered SIM errors). They have made comments that the phone will quit getting calls until they cycle the power. They pretty much assume it is the phone, but don't want to spend money for new equipment. Maybe it isn't so much the phone. Hmmmm.
Hey, you get credit for dropped calls with certain providers, why can't we get a little compensation for having to deal with this hassle? For some, a missed call is a missed sale. For others, a missed job opportunity. Or in the case of our office, a missed call could get an officer killed.

while somewhat dramatic when you aree to the terms of service the pasted section below in the current ATT terms is what you are agreeing to.
there are similar sections in all providers service agreements.
Service/Coverage Limitations
Service is not available at all times in all places.
Coverage maps are available at att.com/wireless and
are subject to the additional limitations described there.
There are gaps in coverage within the service areas
shown on coverage maps, which, by their nature, are
only approximations of actual coverage. I accept AT&T's
service with these limitations.
technically speaking the carrier doesnt have to credit anything... but they do... most of the time its a "shut-up and go away credit"

UPDATE:
The plastic tab 'bend-n-fix' did not work. I had the Unregistered SIM error this morning. I have a customer service person on the phone (on hold actually) at this very second. I will update this as soon as I get off the phone.
From what I am being told, this is a Motorola issue. Updated software versions should resolve the issue, but it isn't something that can be pushed out to our phones. It would require getting the update from Motorola, then connecting the phone to a PC, loading the update, etc... It just seems like a bit more work on the 'end user' than Joe-consumer would normally want to put into something like this. I may look into getting a different brand phone just for testing purposes. I like the V9, (and Motorola for that matter) I really do, but missing calls is not something that goes very well with my current occupation.

I don't doubt it.
Who can I call at Motorola to get the update? I'm geeky enough to get the updates. I can keep you posted, if you're interested.

Thanx, Manator. With my V9, I got the "Software is up to date, no updates available" message. Gonna try the girlfriend's V3xx tomorrow.

Still not resolved. I got the message again this morning. I did, however, get the direct number for one of the local Jackson engineers (tech guy) who wanted me to call him as soon as I noticed the error. That way he could back-track an hour or so and see where I was when it happened as compared to other 'network' things.
I called, but no response as of yet on this.
I also ran into ANOTHER person having the same issue. This one is a detective for the Clinton PD. He gets the message a few times a day on his V3xx. (Add one more to the list)

Putter, our group hasn't had the problem for several days now, knock on a popular cellulose product (okay, wood, ya'll). Like I said, we tavel between the Florence/Richland/Jackson/Brandon/Pelahatchie area. Perhaps they are taking it tower by tower (which seems a little odd, but who knows) and your area will be straightened out soon. Or else we're dreaming and we'll all have the problem today!
AT&T announced a $60-million tower upgrade and new construction yesterday. About time, if you ask me. Cellular South was about to kick AT&T's ass in the tower department.
