that's right. with upcoming qchat and wimax sprint is going to slowly start phasing out iDEN. they hope to accomplish this within the next 4 years. so what happens to iden? the government is going to buy it for big bucks and use it to streamline communication within itself. of course they will have encrypted handsets so eavesdropping isn't so easy. this is going to be a huge revenue generator for sprint as the government will be buying up all the iden equipment sprint has. and the funny part is, after the government gets iden, it will most likely have the best coverage in america.

Hard to say that, Iden coverage by itself is absolutely atrocious. There coverage is just terrible, hopefully the government has their own towers to use to supplement.

more than likely they will, as several government agencies will be funding this project, including but not limited to, the department of defense, secret service, national guard, fbi, and some larger municipalities,
It is being replaced with qchat. more info in another thread.

To be honest with you, who gives a shit about DirectConnect. Does it have it's uses? Sure. Is it necessary for most of us? Absolutely not. Mobile to mobile replaced 80% of the 'need' for walkie talkie, as most users only got it so they could talk to other people for free. That's right, for those that don't know, EVERY other major cell provider includes mobile to mobile with the bulk of their plans, and with full duplex communication, instead of half, you can now cut someone off if they are saying something stupid, instead of waiting for them to release the button. I will repeat. DirectConnect is not 'needed' by the bulk of people who think they need it. It was useful for government, certain corporate, and contractor's as it provided a durable means of communicating with people. To be able to get ahold of an employee or supplier was the primary focus of DirectConnect. It was not designed as a cheap way for standard consumers to talk to their friends.

Yeah it is. Can you imagine one of your buddies hitting you up in an elevator ride with your boss.
"HEY, what the F#CK is going on BYATCH?!?!?!?" Not a good thing.

That's why you turn direct connect off during times like those.

Or I can not have the feature, stick with Alltel and be happy. Last time I called Alltel with a question, I was off the phone with my answer in less then a minute. And that was talking to a live person, not just an automated quick check question.
