it's probably too long or large of a file size. trim it to less than 30 sec, iono what the size limit is.

Yeah I just got a W580i and was really mad the first day I got my phone because I found out we couldnt use a MP3 for a ringtone. But today I found a website that allows it. I just out through making many ringtones of different lengths of the same song that the longest it could be is 50 seconds. I dont know where you got your ringtone but for the website I use its 50 seconds max
you can use mp3, it's dependent on length and size.

I never had any issues with length or size - my problem with the w580i was that it didn't allow MP3s to be used as ringtones at all, unless they were DRM protected content - aka the kind that you have to buy. unless you're cheap, in which case you do as follows to protect them and transfer them to the phone.
Download the DRM Packager - it's available from the Sony Ericsson website, just google it.
Download MyPhoneExplorer - it's great, and connects with the W580i no problem.
First, open up the DRM Packager, stick in the MP3s you want as ringtones, and go to Options, Configuration - select Combined Delivery, hit okay. Then go to Options, Rights - and give yourself whatever rights you want, and click okay. Then hit Create DRM Content.
Open up MyPhoneExplorer, go to Files (make sure your phone is connected to the conputer via USB, in phone mode) - and drag your protected files into the root of the phone. Do NOT put it onto the memory card OR into the phone memory. After it transfers, the phone will pop up with a message asking you what you want to do with it, including setting it as a ringtone.
Enjoy!
That'll work, to the best of my memory - if the lack of DRM protection is your problem - I'm not sure if it is.
