I am wanting to buy the XV6800 and use the wi-fi capability on it to use the internet. OK, so the Verizon representative I talked to on the phone said that even when I'm using the Wi-Fi to browse the internet, you will be charged for that usage. Is it me or is this guy way off base? I understand the discounts and so on of buying a data plan with the phone, but I can't get past the part where he said it charges you to browse the internet using wi-fi. Is it me or is he way off base?

Well after researching a little more, I have found out a little more info. Some people are saying that it connects to a wifi hotspot great, and others say when they try to access the internet through internet explorer, it always tries to access the Verizon network. I'm really confused and do not know who to believe on this one. Wish I could use one for about a week and find out myself!

I have that phone (actually, the 6700) right now with Verizon. You will need a data plan no matter what, I think, even if you are just using hotspots. If it cant connect to a wi-fi hotspot, it will automatically try and connect to Verizon's regular network (which is still pretty quick). They have both a (pricey) unlimited plan for like $40 or $45 a month, or a limited plan for less (maybe $20?). However, if you plan on using the web a lot, dont bother with the limited plan.
I've had quite a few issues with the 6700 that make me think getting the 6800 wont be a great idea. I plan on switching next month and am currently considering other options such as a Samsung or Blackberry.
Edit: Ok, I've done a bit more research and it does appear that you can access Wi-Fi without a data plan (you cant with Blackberry's I think though). However, I think you'll find that going without a data plan is not worth it. I certainly wouldnt try it - at least not yet. In addition, if email is huge for you, you cant wait until you hit a hot spot to access it, which means you'll need Verizon's network and a data plan. Bottom line, if you dont want to pay for a data plan, stay away from the 6800 or the Samsung. Get the Blackberry Pearl.
