Call and messenging problem on unlocked Motorola KRZR K1

Just recently I purchased an unlocked KRZR K1 phone on ebay. After switching the SIM card from my other phone and onto the KRZR, the mobile unit was able to detect the AT&T service (which I'm subscribed at). However, I began realizing that even though the signal was strong and the service was detected, calls or messages weren't able to be made or received. After a few hours, calls and messages were able to be sent/received but then it would stop again. So this whole cycle would keep on repeating itself.
This is very frustrating and I was just wondering if anyone knew what might be wrong with my phone as I am trying to use it on the AT&T network. The unlocked KRZR K1 I purchased on ebay is the international version with japanese characters on the keypad.
