*dies from laughing*

at this point, UMTS is a superior technology. both CDMA and GSM are crap or are great. but both are pretty much equal. wake up dude.

Might be
Doesn't change the situation with CDMA - which is the same with GSM.
For some reason, I don't think UMTS will die - looking at GSM and CDMA they are still alive for so many years - but it might be. We will see.

Barciur, I did tell you that Sprint would charge you for roaming if you used more minutes roaming then not. Cingular doesn't charge for roaming, but they will terminate your service if you use more minutes roaming then not for two months in a row, hope you didn't buy the iPhone.

As for CDMA vs. GSM, from what I've read, GSM requires more bars to keep a call, where with my CDMA phone I have held calls at no bars before. I've had them both, and it does seem to hold true, my GSM calls wouldn't hold unless I had at least 2 bars and even then it wasn't great. As phone, not talking data, but as phone technology goes, CDMA appears to be better, and I'm not talking coverage either. Oh, and for the record, GSM chips are cheaper to make then CDMA chips, and that is why the rest of the world has gone that route. It makes the phones more affordable for countries that don't have as much money as others.

I would like to know what's so great about CDMA over GSM.
I've held calls on one bar with GSM and it was good enough to be able to talk.

I'll just say that, bar for bar, CDMA voice quality is better with the same or fewer bars. Not comparing coverage areas, just making calls with similar signal strength, CDMA has had better connections and better voice-quality. This is just my experience, I don't have any tests to back it up with. But I am not on of the ones that strongly recommend one over the other. I use Alltel, works great, customer service is amazing, but you won't hear me type on this forum that everyone sucks and you are stupid if you don't use Alltel. Regions affect the statements made by many and one service will work better in certain areas then others. But looking at similar signal strength, CDMA seems to sound better and hold the call better with the same or less bars.

McGirk -- i agree with you.
I have Sprint and in my home i get like 1 bar and i can have a clear conversation for hours, which is probably why i stick up for sprint so much because when i used cingular in my house, with 2 bars, the call quality was interchangeable, and usually dropped quickly.

Also, McGirk, how do u know all this? u prob. mensioned this before but are you like a moderator or something?

and gettin back on topic, doesnt CDMA phones get better signal in buildings than GSM phones do? Like something about the waves that CDMA penetrate at? idk can someone explain that?

Not if it's 850 GSM. Lower frequency - better penetration. Doesn't have anything to do with GSM/CDMA though
Hey if you explain WHY CDMA is better, and give some arguments that are true, I will accept that. See. I just want arguments that are real. I mean I'm sorry I just made a call with T-Mobile at my house with 1 bar and everything was moderate to good quality, and it stayed with 1 bar never went up to 2 bars.

got htis post on forums wirelessadvisor. i think its pretty accurat

GSM is mature technology, so You don't have to worry traveling across the world, it has better coverage and international roaming feature.
You had rather much talk time in GSM since it has fixed coverage
In GSM You can easy change Your phone with other operator, by changing SIM Card

CDMA had better capacity since, one transmitter work more wide coverage and efficiently than GSM , especially in states
User were unlimited, but coverage get thinner due to high traffic
Reliable on certain weather condition, and little impacted by noise
Efficient on power, since CDMA towers had better coverage
It's soft handovers minimize dropping calls
