See nobody is gonna tell me GSM sucks. It can be done with an efffort and money. It works in every country in Europe so nobody will ever tell me IT CAN'T BE DONE. Now what ATT and T-Mobile are doing with it, that's a diff. story.
But why do it with gsm when they are already replacing gsm with umts, a cdma technology. that doesn't make sense.

u're missing something. they are NOT replacing GSM. they are ADDING to it. any operator that operates only on UMTS has a GSM roaming agreement for voice and such.

And your missing something. why build new gsm towers when umts is clearly the future? Sure gsm will be around for a while, but it will be like amps, still in existance, but not expanded on and barely used.

I'm not certain if I've piped in with this in this thread yet, but covering Poland and covering the US with towers are two totally different tasks. There are very few if any places in Europe that have the amount of empty space that the US has, but coverage still needs to be there because of highways and such. It's a million dollars to put a tower up, and a lot of those western highways are costing companies millions to provide coverage, and they're taking a loss on it, because the population out there does not demand it. Eventually it'll all get done, but this isn't Europe, it's the US, how about we compare the US with Russia for large amounts of populationless empty space, and see how our cell network compares to theirs. It would be a more fair comparison.

Well said. also europe doesn't have our excellent landline system to depend on, so they are naturally more dependent on mobile phones.
