My phone is an O2 Jet - a phone not sold by AT&T and therefore not supported. I have no problems using it on the network for calls and text messages, but as yet I am completely unable to use it for WAP browsing. Every time I attempt to access the browser, it dials the number AT&T provides and then a message pops up that simply saids "Failed.".

The configuration of the WAP settings is more complex than on any phone I've found available in America (this one was developed in the UK). There is the profile, which then accesses "bearer settings" - a separate settings area within the configuration of web access. This area contains two subsets of settings - one for GSM and one for GPRS.

If this isn't too confusing, please keep reading.

In the profile section, you can configure the following (also displayed are my current settings)
Name: MEdia Net
Homepage: http://device.home
Bearer settings: MEdia Net
Conn(ection). Type: HTTP
(Available options: Conn(ection). Oriented, Connectionless, HTTP)

If you select HTTP, the following setup is necessary:
Proxy Address: 066.209.011.061
Proxy Port: 9201

If you select Conn. Oriented, the following setup is necessary:
IP Address: 066.209.011.061
Security: Off (I have also tried selecting "On" - same result)

If you select Connectionless, the following setup is necessary:
IP Address: 066.209.011.061
Security: Off (I have also tried selecting "On" - same result)

Username: WAP@CINGULAR.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Still with me?

Here are the bearer settings:

GSM:
Account Name: MEdia Net
Number: 18472549271
(I have also tried 1415244101, the other number - same result)
User name: WAP@CINGULAR.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Line Type: ISDN
Speed: 9.6 Kbps
DNS: 000.000.000.000

GPRS:
Account Name: MEdia Net
APN: wap.cingular
User Name: (blank)
Password: (blank)
Auth(entication). Type: Normal (the other option is 'secure')

Straight from the AT&T site, here are the browser/internet settings. As you can see from comparing the two, the only differences in what I have and what is given from AT&T is the Gateway IP (which I assume is what my phone means by proxy address) and the timeout (for which there is no available place to put it)
* Name: MEdia Net
* Homepage: http://device.home
* Service Type 1: WAP
* Gateway IP: 66.209.11.61
* Port 1: 9201
* Domain 1: Blank
* Service Type 2: WAP
* Gateway IP 2: 000.000.000.000
* Port 2: 9201
* Domain 2: blank
* DNS 1: 000.000.000.000
* DNS 2: 000.000.000.000
* Timeout: 15 minutes.
* CSD No 1: 14152441012 or 18472549271
* Username: WAP@CINGULAR.COM (required for CSD use only)
* Password CINGULAR1 (required for CSD use only)
* Speed (Bps) 1: 9600
* Linetype 1: ISDN
* CSD 2: Blank
* Username 2: Blank
* Password 2: Blank
* Speed (Bps): 9600
* Line Type 2: ISDN
* GPRS APN: wap.cingular
* Username: <leave blank>
* Password: <leave blank>

What I'm thinking is that the phone is not using GPRS, which (if I'm correct) doesn't require you to call a number. But the phone has GPRS always on (there is an option for using it when necessary, with the same results). I don't know if there is a setting that I'm missing, but I think not.

I'm completely out of investigative ideas. I've tried every possible combination of settings available, to no avail. I'd like to have WAP browsing, as it is a useful feature. Can anyone help?

Alternatively, is it possible for AT&T to send the settings to my non-AT&T/non-standard phone?

Respectfully,
Jacob M.

Well, I'm feeling a little foolish. After scouring the internet for a solution, I decided to go through every possible setting on the phone. On a whim, I decided to reset my phone to factory settings and try setting up the browser from scratch.

It worked. No flaws, no trouble.

For those who might be interested (other O2 Jet users?), here are the settings:

Under Bearer Settings
GSM Data
(you'll need to pick a blank slot from the 10 available)
Account Name: MEdia Net
Number: 14152441012
User Name: WAP@CINGULAR.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Line Type: ISDN
Speed: 9.6 Kbps
DNS: 000.000.000.000

GPRS
(you'll need to pick a blank slot from the 10 available)
Account Name: MEdia Net
APN: wap.cingular
User Name: (blank)
Password: (blank)
Auth. Type: Normal

Under Profile
Name: MEdia Net
Homepage: http://device.home
Bearer Settings: MEdia Net
Conn. Type: Conn. Oriented

When the IP Address screen comes up upon selecting "Conn. Oriented"
IP Address: 066.209.011.061
Security: Off

Username: (blank)
Password: (blank)

(be sure to Activate the profile afterwards by selecting 'Options' and then 'Activate')

I don't think the settings are any different than they were the first time (when I first posted), but something must have changed from the factory reset! Woohoo!

. would you believe this is a problem I spent many hours trying to figure out, even e-mailing O2 over a couple of weeks to get help? Unbelievable that all this took was resetting the phone.

Peace,
Jacob M.

P.S. Multimedia messages now work too - just make sure to go to the settings, create (or edit) a profile for the following settings:
Name: AT&T
Message Server http://mmsc.cingular.com
Bearer Settings: MEdia Net
(from that GPRS profile you created earlier)
Conn. Type: Conn. Oriented
(be sure to highlight & select this option so that the IP address screen opens up)
IP Address: 066.209.011.061
Username: (blank)
Password: (blank)
