You dummy. UMTS IS (based off of) GSM
W-CDMA IS (based off of) GSM
LOOK IT UP KID
| Quote: | W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is a type of 3G cellular network. W-CDMA is the higher speed transmission protocol used in the Japanese FOMA system and in the UMTS system, a third generation follow-on to the 2G GSM networks deployed worldwide.
More technically, W-CDMA is a wideband spread-spectrum mobile air interface that utilizes the direct sequence Code Division Multiple Access signalling method (or CDMA) to achieve higher speeds and support more users compared to the implementation of time division multiplexing (TDMA) used by 2G GSM networks.

Actually what it is saying here, is the 3Generation follow up for the currect GSM which uses TDMA technology, will use CDMA air technology, because it is faster and supports more people. Essentially UMTS is using the WCDMA technology as it's choice to upgrade to.

Thank you mcgirk! gsm is currently using tdma and the part where i think manator got confused is where they market it as 3gsm. now umts does use gsm voice codecs but uses the wcdma air interface, which makes it a cdma technology, since it is using channel division instead of time division like current gsm does now.
thank you iowa (aka myself)
Good way to thank yourself with meatpuppets.
Me confused? Hardly - W-CDMA and CDMA are not the same, apparently McGirk didn't do enough research either. Look it up guys. You will clearly see and understand that W-CDMA is a GSM technology, not a TDMA or a CDMA technology.

TDMA (time division multiple access) is a time based multiplexed signal 3x3 matrix.so in one voice channel there are 3 calls . a very old an inefficient technology
CDMA (code divsion muliti access) is a code based matrix 12X12 (12 calls a channel)
GSM is more similar to CDMA but is an 8x8 matrix ergo 8 per channel.
your source apperars to be wiki. not a very good resource for this industry

I am using wiki, speakeasy and technical guides for my sources.

Let's do an experiment. I'll put some fake info about GSM 900 and we'll see how long will it stay there.

Not very long.
And now it's reversed. You can tell how quick it will be by looking at the history - if there is recent activity, more than likely someone will notice it.I do that all the time to on random stuff, gets fixed real quick too
