My contract with Alltel expires in a month or two, so I have been checking out the latest phones to see which one I want to get with the new contract I will be signing. I think I am going to be getting the LG Glimmer (AX830), but before I do, I wanted to get some kind of review on the phone. I am looking to get the low-down on everything good and bad about the phone.
A couple things I would like to have verified by current owners:
1) what are the ringer options? I know there is that nagging gradual ringer, but is there an option for vibrate and ring?
2) Have you been able to upload from your computer (via USB data cable) mp3s and then use them as ringtones for contacts?

Generally Alltel will let you use mp3's as ringers, but they usually have to be loaded onto phone memory, and that will get eaten up quickly be the large size of mp3's. Personally I would recommend loading them onto the memory card from a card reader, and then put them into the phone from there, that way you don't ever have to hook your phone up, or find software to interface your phone. I have loaded ringers and wallpapers onto my phone in this many with most of my Alltel phones. I do not own the Glimmer, but I do own the AX380 Wave, and I would expect many of the features to work the same. I can tell you that the night mode on the camera is nice. In total darkness it is no better, but with a little light it really makes the pictures come out much better.
Not enough reviews to really be conclusive yet, and unfortunately this site doesn't attract a lot of Alltel's customers.

Okay.
the other concern of mine was the ringer itself. Is it true that the only actual ringer is the gradual one? Is there a ring & vibe ringer as well?
I am definitely looking at getting this phone, just want to make sure it'll be worth my money. Does alltel normally do returns on phones if it turns out I dont like it?

If you think you will be returning the phone, it will definitely be easier to get it from a sales location, rather then online or over the phone. I doubt that that is the only ringer, but without having owned one it's hard for me to say, that and my location doesn't carry it yet, so I can't just power one on and check it. My AX380 Wave had about 40 ringers, if that is any kind of indication of what LG usually does.

Well, yeah I'd be getting it from an Alltel store.
What I meant about the ringers was the different ringer styles (Loud, Soft, vibrate, silent, etc). I was more or less wondering if theres a ringer style that rings and vibrates at the same time. Some of my friends have an LG and it has this function, so I was somewhat hoping that the AX830 had this as well.
I am planning on getting the USB data cable for the phone to transfer the custom ringers i make, but if you say the microSD card is easier, then ill use that. So long as I can use custom ringers

It shouldn't be difficult to move ringers off of the card onto the phone for use. Some phones have no issues with vibe/ring, but others don't operate so well while attempting to do that. It seems that certain ringers will not ring with the vibe option on.

You WILL NOT be able to use an mp3 as a ringtone on this (or any other new phone) since all phones now come out with new DRM software. All ringtones will have to be purchased through the vendor provided on the cell phone.
This is a Digital Rights Management issue.

Most companies already do not allow you to, but we'll see if Alltel follows suit, so far they have not, I have not tried out any of the phones released this year, but most of the ones I have tried including some of last years models still allowed you to use your own sounds for ringtones.

Okay. i think im gonna be hitting up the Alltel store tomorrow to see what the selection is. I also heard that the mail-in rebates that Alltel is showing on their website are for only online purchases? I am gonna be getting mine in-store, so if I cant get any kind of rebate, is there anything I should ask the sales people to find out if I can get some more $$ knocked off?
Also, whats the Alltel's store return policy in case that I dont like the phone? I would assume its 30 days, but I want to make sure
Also, if its a Music Player, wouldn't you be able to transfer music to the phone anyways? Seems dumb of them to market it as a music player and then not allow you to put your music on it. As for the ringtone thing, thats gotta be a simple thing to do as well.

Alltel does not have a music store that I know of, so you should have no trouble with loading your own mp3's. Mail-in rebates that are offered online are generally also offered in store. Online occasionally offers a slightly higher discount, but if you want to be helped by a person in store, I would not expect a further discount. A brick and mortar building with employees will cost more then a warehouse and a website to move the same kind of product, if you want local help, pay the little extra the web may be offering off. Alltel has a 14 day no penalty early return, this should be plenty of time, especially if you buy it instore.
