Hi
The Yamaha software is the correct way to convert your files. You can use Winamp to convert the mp3's to WAV, but you have to use an audio editor like Sound Forge or Cooledit to shorten the file to a respectable length. Most MMF capable cellphones only accept 30KB and less in MMF file size, which is about 10-15 seconds of sound.
I have a few MMF's for download at my site on Ringtone Conversions and Free Ringtone Downloads. Further, check out my directory of Free Ringtone Download Websites for sites that offer free ringtone downloads in various formats. Should set you on your way to ringtone heaven  .

Hi
Software like Mobile Music Polyphonic claims to do this, it's about $25. Else you can used Yamaha's WSC-MA2 software after you exported a wav from your mp3 in winamp. It's all free. I don't think there is free software to do the trick...
