We'll be going to Vancouver and Vancouver Island, BC in July and we have both Verizon U.S. service as well as some unlocked quad band GSM phones we used here and in Europe. I notice Canadian charges to get a pre-paid SIM seem outrageous. I'll check into temporarily extending the Verizon service into Canada (their site is awful for looking up the cost of this) but anyone have suggestions on for alternatives?
Thanks.

visit the local ROGERs wireless store and buy a prepaid card
website is www.rogers.com
it will be far less expensive than paying the roaming charges of 69¢/minute

I looked at Rogers but it is $35 not counting minutes. We are going for a week only (rest of the time will be in the U.S.) and that just seems excessive.
I did try to call Verizon. so frustrating. Because the service is in my son's name, I have to go through hoops just to call them even though I am asking a generic question "How much to extend service to Canada for a week [probably one month minimum]?" and then we got disconnected before I got an answer. I guess I'll have to have my son call them.

try howardforums.com in the Rogers forum. you find a dealer there that can hook you up with a free sim in vancouver. then you'll only be paying the airtime.

Here in the states, buying the phone with the sim seems to be a cheaper way to go, they may have decent deals there packaged, but if you're only going for a week, and $35 is too much, perhaps you could consider not having a cell for one week. It may sound weird, but 10 years ago you wouldn't have had a cell while you were there, and we did survive, and it is only for one week.
