I just got a Sony w580i and was wondering if there is anyway to make it so that peoples personalized ringtones ring when that person is sending me a text message, not just when they call me.

One tone for all messages. No Sony that I know of can change the text sound on a per contact basis.

Nope, not possible unless you can do intensive patches yourself.
